How to re-finish a foam warbird

Over the last month or so, I've been working on a series (both video and written) on how to re-finish a foam warbird. Though not the end all approach on how to do this, it is one approach you can take when you decide to go for it. There are a ton of really cool foam warbirds out there, but being a serious scale guy, the oversized panel lines always get me. So, the subject aircraft in this case is an FMS P-51. I was fortunate enough to score a ride in Ken Wagoner's "Lady Alice" P-51 back in February, so the choice of aircraft and paint scheme were easy.

I had posted the videos in the FMS P-51 thread, but thought I would collect all of the videos into a single thread for future reference for those interested. I've also included the links to my blog articles as well as I have links to all of the products I used there. Hopefully some of you guys will find these helpful!

Assembly Review and Paint Stripping

This first video is a quick review of the airplane out of the box and then how to strip the paint from the airframe. Using acetone, the paint comes off fairly easily and remarkably the acetone does not affect the EPO.

Filling, Contouring and Sealing

This second video deals with filling in the panel lines with lightweight spackle and smoothing it out to get a smooth contour (no big panel lines) over the entire airframe. From there we apply multiple coats of polycrylic to smooth it out and seal it up.

Paint Prep and PAINT!

This is the final installment discussing the paint preparation (sanding and primering) and the painting process. The paint job was applied using tamiya AS spray cans and model master enamel paints.

Great videos and information. Planning on doing an Eflite P47, now I have a pretty good idea how to do it. Thanks for sharing!

Agreed. You've inspired me to completely redo my FMS Big Beautiful Doll. Same livery, but I'm filling all the panel lines and bringing it back to like new condition. I'll post results when I finish it, someday.
