How Important is Flight Controller Location on a Multirotor.??
This came up in the KK2 thread but could pertain to many other Multirotor Flight Controllers, so I've given it it's own thread...
This is a simple and basic choice all of us who build MR's have to face. Where do we place the FC on our MR? From pictures and videos it would seem to suggest that most people mount their FC's along the motor's central axis.
ASSUMPTION: Let's assume for this discussion, that you fly with a mixture of both self leveling on and off. So FC placement must take into account both flight modes. To simplify, let's leave Camera Gimbals out of this discussion..made all that much easier by the rapid trend to brushless gimbals.
Here are a few questions to get the ball rolling...
- Do some FC's require central (ie along motor axis) mounting?
- Are there MR configurations (Hex, Quad, Oct,..etc) that are more/less sensitive to FC placement?
- How does the change in rotational moment with off center FC placement effect flight dynamics?
- Does off center FC placement increase stress on Motor/ESC/...?
- Does off center FC placement change flight dynamic latency/response time?
theothercliff, brought up some good points in his post, that made me start thinking.
Would like to hear from other's on this subject....

FC must be mounted at the C.G. of the MR. Balancing the fully loaded fram is fairly important to avoid over corrective trimming and consistency between normal and auto-level flight modes.
