A disassembly question for you gents:

A friend wants to change bearings on an FA-56, which apparently has a removable pinion gear that is secured on the crankshaft with a locking pin.

He's asking how to remove the pin and pinion gear, any tips?

The gear is not pinned to the crankshaft it is slotted and held against the pin with a sleeve between the gear and the front bearing. You just push the crankshaft out of the engine and the gear and spacer will fall off and be left in the opening where the camshaft housing mounts. Just reverse the process to put it back together, insert the end of the crank far enough to slide the gear and then the spacer back on then line up the slot to the pin and finish pushing the crank into the crankcase.
