Motor for 1/2A ALES
The way I understand the rules for this class is anything goes if the motor is only 28 x 16mm in flux ring size and a 2S lipo. My question is: What motor is the "horse" for this class?
All suggestions will be welcome since I don't have a clue where to start.

I didnt know there was such a class in ALES. I dont see anything about it in the rules.
You will likely need to ask the folks who came up with that "class" - I suspect its a local thing that one particular club is doing.

The class is listed in the ALES heading in RC groups under Sailplanes. Thinking about building a GL for the 1/2 A competition. Looking for the bigest, meanest motor that qualifies.
Is this really new?

The Albuquerque club used to (maybe still does?) fly a small electric sailplane class with those motor requirements.
If I remember correctly, the motor of choice was the Hacker A20-20L and a 2S lipo.
This was for an event with a timed motor run, so the defined power system kept things equal for everyone.
In an ALES event, the power automatically shuts off at the specified altitude, so inequalities in power systems don't matter.

There was a rules change proposal that passed to provisional stage that replaces the Speed 400 brushed motor with a spec outrunner that is the same as the ABQ class rules. This is for 1/2A LMR.
The idea was that instead of putting $100 gearboxes on $10 motors that often didn't last the LMR contest, replace with that small outrunner and you have a model that's a ncie performer and doesn't break the bank ... and the outrunners last forever unlilke those crappy Speed 400's.
The change can be seen when the 2013-2014 AMA Rules documents are published in January.
ALES has no classes, designed from the start that way. CD's may make local changes, it's one of the biggest draws of the format.
