Thanks again and good to see you at the NEAT.
You have the wrong model heat sink. There are several models from GWS for the 12mm motor. You sould be using the EHS50. I have them on hand. Current stock is blue, used to be they were all black. The sink with the really fine fins you have migh be usable if you can break out a fin (or use a cut off wheel to grind out) on opposite sides. I wouldn't sand down the ply mounts.

Hi Dave...when I search for that stock number on the website I get the below results....I assume it's the second product SKU GWEHS50).
I need to order some Solite and a couple other items anyway.

Also, do you have a photo of the push-rod attachment scheme for the steerable gear? I can't seem to get my thick head around the written explanation.

Thanks again! Art.

Art, it's the second one, I think the first one as a suffix "A" on the part number. It's a neato part but not the right one for your kit. The bottom one is the one I measured for that mount. It's the most common part available which is why I designed it around that one.

Art,
Looks good. The mini airframe seems to be a solid platform for these EDF's. I cant wait to read a flight report. Also, can you detail your specs in terms of radio, servos and esc?

Thanks for sharing!

Hi Dan...good to hear from you since the S400 posts.
So far I've framed up the fuselage but I'm leaving the forward section open for now as it seems easier to install the front former, nose gear and push rod before closing the section off for good......I'll cover the bottom by starting at the nose gear by poking it through the covering then working fore and aft (after sanding of course). I plan on using Assan 4-channel Rx, 2 x 10-amp ESC's (already replaced the GWS brushed motors with 12-30 brushless counterparts) and bluebird 303B servos (my favs). I hope to have the wing framed up by the weekend, however, I'll be going on a nasty work schedule starting next week so with the delay I'm shooting for a Thanksgiving weekend maiden. I'll start taking some photos to document the process...perhaps it will be helpful for other folks. I never build or fly the usual projects like cubs, etc so I'm really enthused about including this in my offbeat collection of airplanes!

I'm glad 325FGP did a post about extra parts otherwise I would have had to ask....looks like I have the same ones in my kit.....I copied the part of his photo which includes my "extras."

Received the new heat sinks from Radical today. Does anyone know if this is the intended mounting scheme for these half round units?
Thanks!

Edit.....maybe I have the mount spread too far?
totally lost on this one

Next edit.....figured it out but needed a little CA to secure the plywood mount to the heat sink......I hope Dave supplies these mounts separately!

Made a little more progress.....I installed the EDF's with brushless 12mm motors. Twin esc's are glued to the wing servo so the high current wires can be routed directly to the motors...I wanted shortest runs possible so this lets me get away with that....also gets the esc's out of the fuselage. This is a highly technical build with lots of wiring and weight considerations: I'm a bit worried right now that I'm coming in way over weight...it's also been a real pain trying to route the wires and figure out where the battery is going to fit (and the nose gear isn't even hooked up yet). I'll keep plugging away but I'm having doubts about this airplane's viability in the air....I think I'll donate a maximum of 2 more evenings for the cause then she's going into Art's air museum of lead-sleds.

You should have a couple spares included with the kit. Looking good so far.

I'm trying to get psyched up enough to get back to mine.

Yep....saw the spares...I already broke one during assembly so they've come in handy....arghhhhh.
When the time comes I'll replace the motor mounts with square cross- section carbon tubing, assuming I still have the patience to deal with this beast.

The only item left on this build is to figure out the battery hold-down scheme.....I dislike velcro for battery applications but I may have to use it here due to space constraints. So far AUW is around 9 ounces. Got a few more pics of the progress....if I get time later tonight I'll add a you-tube link for the motor test video.

Edit: Here's the test video:
Mini Hunter Test (0 min 57 sec)

5.7 Amp draw, 60 Watts at full throttle.

Thanks Dan....I'll post more pics when I figure out the battery hold-down scheme.
Hopefully I'll have a maiden flight video sometime next weekend.....I'm a bit above Dave's 100 watt per pound spec so I have some renewed hope in the airplane...let's see how it goes

Art,

Very nice. Although Im surprised you arent following Dave's specs of brushed motors and Nicads. Not a poke at Dave at all, just that Dave is radical in an old school way.

My backup plan is to strap the Nicads to my belt and run the airplane control-line....I hear circle-burning is tons of fun
