Some work, some don't. None I have seen are as good as the real thing. So many out, hard to say what you are getting.
Most are just a piezo gyro, several generations behind current high end gyro's.

I have one and it worked but not nearly as good as a real GY401. After reading the forums I found that one problem was the inside board was not mounted very well. After taking it apart and packing the inside with foam it was able to fly a helicopter fairly well.

I think Roto Bob got it right, there is a big difference in the quality of the sensor between the clones and the real thing.

A real GY401 is expensive but it works great. If you have the money a Spartan gyro is what you want. If you get one of those you will never need to upgrade no matter how big of a helicopter you get in the future.

Are you talking about the 401B gyros, they are not clones, they are a completely different technology. But they do look like GY401s.

What gyro are you speaking of? Can yoy post a link?

Hasnt arrived yet... but the image looks alot like the clone image ( the G an the 1 on the front)... altho, the seller just asured me in an email that they are "genuine Futaba"...

We shall see soon when it arrives... Wonder if ebay or paypal will refund my money since he says they are genuine...???

Wow, they are cloning the GY401s now, thanks for the heads up, I've been considering one from that same seller. If it is a clone, I would expect it to work well, if it is a cheap copy, I would be a bit concerned. I actually ordered a clone AR6100E for $17 shipped, works well and looks identical to the my original AR6100Es.

I actually have 5-6 of the clone AR6100e and they work flawlessly.. apart from 1 that sometimes takes awhile to find my TX when i plug it in....
so not worried at all about them... but i am concerned about the clone GY,s...

i had 2, one never worked and the 2 dipp switches fell off when i removed the tape. the second one i had on my 450 it always rotated slowly in HHmode but finally died after 10 flights.
if you want a cheap gyro go with the gy48v , i have 3 so far . i have one on my EXI 450CF , flyes great, one on my HK250GT , and another on my HK450V1.

Yep, teh GY48V is a good low cost gyro, but it is not a GY401 clone and neither is the HK401, the 401B or any of those piezo gyros. they are good low cost gyros, but clearly the production line is getting sloppy, but THESE ARE NOT GY401 CLONES. They are a different technology (piezo vs SMM).

Look at the link the OP posted, it says it is a Futaba GY401 gyro, but I am beginning to suspect.....like the OP, that is is not.

Look at the link the OP posted, it says it is a Futaba GY401 gyro, but I am beginning to suspect.....like the OP, that is is not.

I agree those gyros are capable of flying a helicopter but are not good enough for 3D. If you buy cheap you buy twice.

was apparently a release by Futaba them selves saying watch out because they are nearly identical looking... of course funtionally not identical

good find on that release from futaba.

i actually emailed the ebay seller that has those "401's". he claims them to be genuine futaba gy401 gyros.
i almost bought one, they sure do look real but the packaging is what looks a bit "off" to me.

in the end, i just got a hitec hg5000.

well i have 2 on the way.... i hope they are the real deal.... will suck if they arent... will try to get a refund if so...

they LOOK real though....and the dude i emailed said they were.
wouldn't ebay make the seller pull them from the auction if they were knock-offs touted as genuine futaba?
