EAA 690 - CarolAnn Garratt, World rounder to be guest speaker at October's meeting
CarolAnn Garratt, World rounder to be guest speaker at October's meeting
World-record holder, pilot, and author, CarolAnn Garratt will speaking to EAA Chapter 690 about flying around the world in a single-engine plane on Friday, October 12th, 2012 at 8:00 pm.
CarolAnn has completed her third around-the-world flight in her J-model Mooney. Her first, in 2003, took 7 months. Her 2008 flight set a new world record by circumnavigating the world in eight and a half days.
CarolAnn's presentation will be about her third flight, which took 11 months with visits in over 35 countries, including, Madagascar, Jordan, Egypt, Thailand, Israel, Cambodia, Australia and New Zealand. CarolAnn travels around the US and Europe giving presentations about her world flights to raise awareness and donations for ALS (Lou Gehrigís disease) research. Her mother died of this neuro-degenerative disease in 2002. Since that time, CarolAnn has been flying, writing and talking and has raised almost $350,000 to help researchers find a treatment for this terminal disease. CarolAnn has written a book about each flight.
This fast-paced presentation will cover the flights and countries that she visited with lots of stories and pictures. CarolAnnís presentations are educational as well as inspirational. After her previous presentations, many pilots said, "I wish Iíd brought my wife and kids to this presentation." Itís not just about flying, itís about possibilities. Can you imagine landing in Haifa, Israel, or Aqaba, Jordan, or Muscat, Oman, when you donít know anyone there? Itís a leap of faith that has enormous positive results.
CarolAnn, who lives in Florida, is a 4700 hour pilot who was formerly a general manager for a Fortune 500 company. Since retiring she has built a RANS S-7S, flown over 300 Young Eagles and flown many Angel Flights. More information is available at http://www.alsworldflight.com/.
Many members gather at The Flying Machine for dinner around 6:00-6:30. All are welcome for some pre-meeting hangar flying. For additional information contact Lee Olson, firstname.lastname@example.org. The meeting starts at 8:00 PM with many members gathering earlier.
