Question
EC5 setup

What is the default connection type on a ec5 lipo, Male or female. I am getting 6s lipos with 5.5 bullets and converting them to ec5s. then using a series connector for progressive hobby (http://www.progressiverc.com/series-ec5-adapter.html). My issue is that it looks like it should be male coming off the battery's, but when you look at the charge cables they are also male. The charge cable from progressive says female, but then adds it has male connectors. Very confused.

barracudahockey is incorrect. Typically the pins not the housing determine if the connector is male/female but they are frequently labeled incorrectly. This is why Horizon Hobby tried calling them DEV/BAT and good connectors have that labeling actually on them.

The link you gave is labeled correct. It has 1 male and 2 female. A 'female' housing has 'male' pins in it and is typically referred to as a 'male' connector.

Several other items on the ProgressiveRC site are labeled incorrectly though. It's best just to look at the pictures to ensure you get the right thing.

Think of the plastic casing. The battery has the female.

Though internally it has the male pins on the battery side, its still the female connector.
WRONG !!!!!!!! totally

Happens to the best of us.

Now I'll take this moment to point out this is a great reason to switch to Anderson PowerPoles No matter what you got it will always plug into the other one. No male/female to worry about.

*end sermon*

EC (2, 3, or 5) connectors are confusing.

Battery connector Male Housing/ Female Bullet connector
Charger side Female Housing/Male Bullet.

It's best if the vendors use a picture as the naming can be problematic.

All my lipos have the female end on them and the charge lead is male. If you lay them out, male and female, it should be obvious what is what. Look inside your plane where the battery hooks up and you will see it is a male connector.

Pre-heating the plastic shell with a heat gun before you insert the connector pin can really reduce the needed force. Just don't overdo, or the plastic will melt,

There are more than one kind of EC-5 connector, look carefully at the beveled flange before you start. One version requires that you insert the wire through the connector shell before you do any soldering.

I fill the cup about 1/2 with solder before soldering the wire.
Depending on the wire size, you may or may not want to pre-tin the wire.
The idea behind pre-tinning is to make sure that the wire's inner strands
have solder on them.

It's a good idea to find out the cup depth, and adjust the stripped wire length to suit.

Give that the currents can be quite high, solid, well made solder connections are a
necessity.
