Build Log
PT-22 by Peter Rake

This is my build of a prototype Ryan PT-22 by Peter Rake.
It's also a build thread for the Model Airplane Build Clinic.

The model has a 50" wingspan making it just under 1/7 scale.

Other threads:
Marineair also has a Peter Rake PT-22 prototype build thread.
My own thread on the real PT-20, PT-22 and other builds / kits.

Newtron has my old Ryan's Daughter kit and is going to build it this winter. It's a similar plane from the same designer but without the swept wings. It will be interesting to compare the flight characteristics of the two planes.

I've built only one other balsa plane before so I'm especially open to advice on this thread and from the folks over in the build clinic.

This is the short kit from Manzano Laser Works. I like that it includes the fake engine.

I'm starting with the wing. Didn't have enough large magnets to form both wingtips at once.

Or enough light to get the first build shot in focus. Might need to watch that, I need those photos.

Would you like to just check that span? Is that measured at 50", or just from memory? I ask because the actual CAD drawing is over 1.5" more span than that. It's never a bad idea if the plan you're building from is the right size.

You haven't seen the model,or a full scale one ?
There's a full scale that flies out of Bealeton,or Warrenton in sort of Northern Virginia. On Route 17,I think.

Just a little hint from an old professional photographer, more, even lighting and use a tripod if you can. That will stop the blurrs. For publication you need really well lit, and focused photos.

Hey kdahlhaus, I started on Peter's PT-22 this week and was going to start a thread this morning when I saw your had gone up.
I started on the fuse and have most of it framed up. I usually start on the wings too but just came up with a local source for the bass wood for the wing spars so they are lagging behind.

Do you mind if I join your build thread and post my pics and build progress along with you?

Julian

Hey that's cool two pt-22's in one build thread, maybe you can call it the "PT-44 build thread".

I will be watching for sure! Looking forward to your combined maiden flights sometime in the future.
