Black Magic - Still Alive

I'm thinking of starting on a Black Magic - when I do a search I find mostly references by Vintage1 to his kit, but I want to build one from the original plans. This would be a slow summer project, so before I get too involved I was just wondering who's had experience with one? Is it basically a big old lazy old timer - if so, I'm sold

Actually I'm partly motivated by the name - when my colleagues ask what I'm doing, I can reply that I'm working on my black magic

Black Magic

Absolute classic Owl - cracking model, great flyer, good looker. I haven't built mine yet, I have a Flair kit for the radio control version tucked away for next winter, it will be electric of course. I have seen a number of Black Magics fly, both electric and I.C. powered (and even one free-flight - brave man!) and they have all performed faultlessly.

I was lucky enough to meet Fred Hempsall, the designer, almost forty years ago on a trip to the Isle of Man where he then lived. He was quite elderly by this time, but was still building models.

The original plan of the free-flight version as published in Aeromodeller in (I think) 1948 is still available from several sources.

Go to it, a very worthwhile model, maybe we will be able to compare builds!

There's a nice video of an electric Black Magic to get you 'in the mood':

Vintage Black Magic Model (3 min 19 sec)

My Hobby Store sell the plans, bit pricey though once you've added the postage:

Good looking model that really flies well. Mine has never missed a beat in about 6 years of flying.

There are two versions.....1946 as published in 1947......the version I built for a Burford Sabre 250 diesel flown freeflight.
The later version for RC. You have a choice.

The Black Magic was a kit here in Colombia way back in the 60s. It was very successful. Build it, you'll like it. Like other classic oldtimers (Junior 60, Eros etc.) you will enjoy calm slow flying

It was called "La Bruja" meaning The Witch

Picture of our club treasurer Ken Taylor at our club's Vintage Day. Red and silver may not be the most appropriate colour scheme for a Black Magic

Here's mine (sadly no more due to my own stupidity). It was a terrific flyer, and great "thermaler." Mine was built from the original plan. It actually flew quite well on a geared speed 400, though a brushless and lipos improved it greatly.

There are two Black Magics in my club, both RC. One is a bit on the heavy side and is prone to tip stalls, the other one is lighter and is a delight to fly. I guess the moral here is keep the weight down and you will have a nice flier.

Thanks again folk! Those are some good looking aircraft in the photos. It sounds like just what I am after, and will make a fine companion for my Live Wire.

I think I'm probably going to build the later version with 3 windows, and access to the cabin through a hatch. At first I thought the back deck was sheeted - but to my delight I see its all stringered.

Edubarca - I like the name "La Bruja"! Something a little different. Although the girlfriend might not like it if I tell people that I'm going to spend a weekend playing with my witch Do you maybe have a scan or an old advert with the "La Bruja" art on it?

I really prefer the rudder and fin shape on the 1947 plan, annotated as "free flight rudder and fin outline" on the plan posted by Owlsable. Do you think that rudder would have enough area for R/C?
