Billings Smit rotterdam

Hi all,

I have a question about the hull. On ships I have built before I have either covered the bottom with plates and left the rest with planks visible. As this model will have a smooth hull what do you use to achieve the finish? I was thinking of fiberglass but was not sure if there was some kind of resin that is brushed on and sanded to a smooth finish. Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

Thanks Bruce,
That's exactly what I have invested in but was not sure. Mind you, it will be a while before a need it. I reckon a few months to plank the hull.
I have considered RC and may yet do so. Problem is I live in the middle of the countryside and I don't drive and there is no water for miles where I live. Nearest boating lake is 9 miles away. .

PS
These are just a few pictures of the kit. I won't bore you all with kit photos as I am sure other members would have posted some and I have around 50 of them. never attempted a kit like this and am looking forward to the challenge of the build. I have rigged cannons for the Victory but the fittings for that kit where no where near as extensive as for this one. Will start a build log proper either this weekend or next.

Nice pix!

You can create a photo album on FB if you want to keep the Smit pix separate.
How old is the Chocolate Lab?

Starting the keel.
Help from anyone familiar with this kit.
I have not built a wooden kit for a number of years. Kits I have built before have had pieces cut to length to the correct size.
The picture shows the parts of the keel. One part is a 5x5mm strip. The instruction book says it should be 581mm long and shows a single strip. The kit piece is 550mm. Do I need to add the extra bit from another strip or leave a small gap at each end? Also the strip that is 5x12mm is supposed to be 657.5mm long and the kit piece is well over that so do I need to cut to fit? There are two strips that cover these strips so a gap would not be seen. Any advice would be appreciated before I start cutting wood down and ruin the build.

Ya' know Paul, there's still time to put some shaft logs and motor mounts in there, just in case ya' ever get the urge. I'm just sayin'.
