DIY motor winding... (Yes there are other threads)
I have been looking into all of the crazy depths of motor winding and found that many people are in a slight battle over efficiency.
Starting with the basics:
Various terminations are more efficient
Higher power magnets are more efficient
Less Airgap is more efficient
Lower KV with higher Voltage is more efficient
Stranded VS Solid winding???
The last part is where things get tricky. After reading days and days of documentation I do understand that there is a sweet spot where strands outweigh solid becuase of airgap. and if we all had the time and money we could use square or oval wire to wrap our motors. But what is too much?
in the quest for knowledge, I started with an AX2306 motor from hobbyking that was supposidly 2000kv. I wanted much lower KV so I started with the stock wire and rewound. After testing the motor I could only get to around 1400kv with the stock wire in various types of terminations.
I then took that same motor and wound it with 50 strands of 40awg with 15 turns. I actually havent tested the KV but the motor that use to spin a 6x3 and get warm on 3s now can spin a 8x6 on 3s and stay cool. The thrust was measured around 500g which is even more than the AX2308 1100kv with the same setup. I was able to squeeze an extra 9g of copper onto the motor with the new windings!
So my question, before I preprae to rewind an ebay special 1400kv to ~300kv is...
Strands or no strands?
