DOW Blue Foam Reinforcement
I guess you wouldn't call the plane I am designing a foamie, but I will get the most help in this forum.
I am designing a Yak 54 profile fuse for a set of wings that I got from a crashed plane. I decided to use 1/2 blue foam and sheet it with balsa, and cover with Ultracote. Copied the fuse dimensions from some other ARF designs, modified them a bit for my engine, and cut her out. Copied the stab dimensions from my trusty Funtana 90.
My question is about reinforcing the fuse for my gas engine vibration and high G 3d maneuvers. I ran a 1/2 hardwood spar along almost the whole plane to try to stiffen it up a bit, but no dice really. It did make it stronger, but not what I expected. If I pick it up from the end, it will bend quite a bit.
I am going to sheet it with 1/16 in. balsa for more strength, but is it enough?
I have some steel and carbon spars in other parts of the fuse, but nothing big. The hardwood spar was almost the whole plane.
I added lightning holes to the top canopy part, some in the tail also. My buddy advised me to, as his was a bit tail heavy.
How can I strengthen it up?
