Earnshaw

Needed something different from my usual models and a friend suggested the New Zealand steamer "Earnslaw", It looked just right for relaxing sailing sessions but the final design ended up more freelance than scale, hence the different name.
Construction is mainly balsa and card, cheap and easy to work with. Using an approximate scale of 1/72 produced a model 28 inches (71 cm) long with an operating weight of 5.5 pounds (2.5 kg).
Originally a single 385 motor was to drive twin screws through a pulley system. Then I played around with the transmitters internal mixing functions and found that conventional rudder/throttle control could be combined with twin motor mixing whenever required. It has proven to be a pleasure to sail, steering with just the rudder most of the time but bringing in the motor mixing for the tight and tricky bits.
The only problem has been my clumsy fingers knocking a few passengers overboard.

The plans have been sent to the magazine Model Boats.

Glynn, I fell in love with that vessel back in 1990, on a trip to New Zealand. My wife and I actually sailed on Lake Wakatipu and had lunch aboard her.

Somewhere in my archives, I have a set of general plans of Earnslaw, generously donated by Fijorland Travel, her operator at the time.

we took a cessna ride from milford sound to queenstown, I was in the co-pilot seat taking pictures, the earnslaw was out as we flew by and I was straining to get some pictures of her, the pilot tapped me on the shoulder , then he brought the plane around and gave me two great photo passes, banking around the ship giving me the best angles possible.. this was the last trip we shot on "film" the pics are here somewhere in a box!!

A good friend sailed on her last year and I have to say you have done a beautiful job on this vessel Glen.
I might have to build one.
I'll be on the look out for the plans

How neat! My wife and I went to N.Z. on our honeymoon 26 years ago and while we did not go for a ride on her, we did watch her from the wharf and from atop to small mountain rising above the lake.
Great subject. Well done!

She is a real beauty, and I am a sucker for the old passenger steamers. Guess I will have to arrange another "coast-to - coast" transaction for that issue of Model Boats when it comes out.
