spektrum dx6i and dx7 transmission range

I haven't been able to get a solid number as to how far the spektrum signal will carry, so a friend and I tested out our planes -- on the ground -- to see how far we could go, checking it at regular distances and different plane orientations.

setup 1 -- spektrum 7000 rx w/ satellite rx, dx7 tx with lipo batteries.
setup 2 -- spektrum 6100e rx, dx6i tx w/ nimh batteries.

Setup 1 worked perfectly regardless of orientation at .5, .75, .85 miles (800m, 1200m, 1400m)

Setup 2 was good at .5 miles/800m ; good at .75 miles/1200m as long as the plane was not straight up or straight down; and good at .85 miles/1400m only if the transmitter was facing towards the plane.

I'm inclined to think the 7000 receiver made the difference, but I want to try the dx6i with alkalines to see if that changes things any on the transmitter side, or try binding both planes to one tx. Anyone have experience with this?

Do range checks with your fpv gear turned on. Depending where the video tx it may limit your range. I've seen Dx6is getting lockouts 600m out with fpv. I'm not an expert with spektrum but I think people in the forum use 2.4Ghz boosters.

Check out this post for some range tests, not exactly what you want but still interesting.

Yeah, good idea. That will be my next step. I really want to know whether it's the TX or RX that is creating that difference in control distance, although I suspect it's the RX since transmission power is capped in the US at a certain power (200mw or something like that).
