rubber powered ducted fan?? what the story with this
Just came across this link. Anyone up to making something so tedious should get a medal. Wondering how well it works, using two fans? Ive wondered about multiple stage edfs. Can you have a smaller cross section if you have more stages? http://www.geocities.com/CapeCanaver...5/gallery.html

If you are serious about rubber-powered ducted fans, search for David Aronstein and Flying Models magazine. He published at least two designs about ten years ago and I saw David fly at least one of them. Plans from Carstens-Publications can be ordered from www.flying-models.com. I do not know how easy it will be to identify the plans and articles. I undoubtedly have at least one of the key magazine issues but I also know how hard that would be to find here.
To be successful, rubber-powered ducted fans will have to be VERY light. Fred Rash |

I was looking at the plans and have a couple questions.
1) what is the measurement used? millimeters right? 2) can anyone translate the language? is there any important detail that can be missed? The picture of just the fan, is that the 1 used in the plane? it cant be because the length is not full and not as many ribs. I want to make this so i can do some bench tests and maby make a different ducted fan plane. Thanks for the help, Jonny |

it just gives you a general idea of how the fan is made thres not much info provided... so you kinda have to figure it out as you go along....i think that the fan pictured is an example...and not the actual unit installed in the flying model....
if i remember corecttly my fan cage only had 4 ribs... vs 8 as shown in the pic, and once the fan was installed into the fuse.. it spun freely without any interaction. the fan is built into the fuse durring construction...before the sringers are glued on!!! i made that mistake... and had to redo the whole fuse one thing i could never figure out.. and another reason why this thing never got finished.... is that when looking at the plans it looks like there is a 2 section tunnel leading to the fan.... but no real info is provided... i built mine without the tunnel.... but thinking about it later i realized that it does in fact need it! |

actually thinking about it now.. the whole balsa construction can be avoided...
and the plane can be built with durobatics instead!! nice simple and light construction! it should be lighter than the balsa model! should be a real nice model with a plantraco 2ch rx and a nano act... the motor would be a bit tricky though... i would build it.. but im a bit preoccupied with my micro warbirds at the moment... |
