Hyperion Helios F3A 90e Build / Review

I just received my Helios 90e in the mail today.

First impressions upon opening the box:
--Positives--
1. Lite
2. Straight
3. CF Wing Tube
4. Tinted Canopy
5. Well packed and no damage
6. Did I say lite

--Negatives--
1. Poor covering job (at least mine)
2. Three page instruction manual (6 total front and back)
3. Canopy spring/latch attachment not outlined in instructions
4. Maybe too light??? naaa !!

I'll post more pics tomorrow and start on the build.

Elevator is airfoiled is it? And how is it joined? Presume the rudder is pull pull?

Yes, the elevator is airfoiled. It is joined with a wire (sub-standard for a model of this size in my opinion). The rudder is pull-pull but whats funny is the instructions show crossing the wires in the fuse. That, of course, will cause slack in one side when in use.

I spent 2 hours fixing the covering on the fuse this morning. The wings and stab are in the same shape.

On the positive side, the cowl is nice lite fiberglass and painted very well.

DSP - the covering goes like that at times because of the changes in temp from factory to LHS. Still its a bummer ...

The recommended servos do not fit in the wing. They are too deep. The wing is very thin at the section they have cut out for the servos. I had some good servos that were about 1/8" more shallow and you can see they still stick up before mounting.

Also, the canopy latch shown in the photo comes with this hardware. While it looks very impressive, there are no provisions in the instruction on how it all goes together.

I wonder if anybody at Hyperion has actually put one of these together??

I was able to figure out and put the pieces together to make the canopy latch as shown from the pics in the previous post.

It actually works quite well. It is spring loaded internally. Now off to the landing gear.

I think you may have built the canopy latch wrong. I have the Hyperion Yak 54 40e and the latch is preinstalled with the spring part mounted to the rear body and the plywood plate mounted on the back of the canopy. Should work either way but less untidy looking than a block of wood in teh canopy window. Like your plane though the covering was poor and required a lot of work to get it nice and tight. Probably we got kits that have been sitting in cool areas for a bit.

I think your right. Maybe if the instructions would of said something to an owner that has never built a Hyperion kit before or if I was a little smarter, I would have figured it out. Thanks for your help.

The 90e looks alot like my 63e. You might want to check out the build thread on the 63e it might help you with your build.

As far as the covering goes...thats not normal. Use a iron to shrink it back up, and it will stay tight. Be careful around the seams though. Hyperion did not put the colors over the white. Its seperate pieces seamed together. If you shrink it too much, it will uncover balsa.
Once you get it all tight again..it will stay that way. The covering is really nice stuff. Not sure what they covered it with.

Dont rush it, take your time putting it together...and you'll end up with a really nice plane.

You couldnt pry my 63e from my cold dead fingers. Love that plane.

Thanks for the info Bryan.

I'm almost finished. I need to get the front gear installed and put decals on the plane.

Just received mine finally. Awsome looking plane. The covering on mine is perfect so maybe it is just a temperature change thing. Also my canopy latch is preinstalled - maybe it is a latter model change?

Going on holiday for 2 weeks so won't be able to get started for a while.

Has yours flown yet?

Your miles from home and you still manage to find time for RC groups. Will be down to check it out the week after you get back. Have a great holiday.
