Question
Trouble cutting 3/4oz Fiberglass

Hi all,
I occasionally use 3/4oz Fiberglass to re-enforce foamy wings and fuses, nothing really professional. I use masking tape and ordinary scissors to cut FG without any problem. But after placing the FG on the wing and wetting it with epoxy , when I try to cut the (wet) edge of the FG that still has the masking tape on, it's a nightmare. The cloth will fray and there is a mess of fibers hanging out.

Question is, is there a quality pair of scissors or any other means to do a neat final cut of the FG while it is laying wet on the wing?

Thanks for any help.

If you are cutting right after applying the resin you will have a nightmare.
Let the resin setup for a bit before trying to cut it.

If you still need to do the cut wet, it might help if you grind/sharpen your scissors with a rough grinding stone so you get a sharpened saw-toothed kind of edge on them. You can also try to dip the scissors in alcohol before cutting to avoid the epoxy to stick to the blades.

Thanks for the advice. I thought the problem with the scissors was the gap between the two blades. I just noticed there are some marks of dry epoxy that may make the gap larger. I will sand them off and use my grinding stone to make it sharper and then see how it goes.
I also read about the "plastic sandwitch" method and may try that too.
Nice to know that cheap scissors can make the job.
