Newbie Brushless/EDF question

Hey guys,
Long time lurker, first time poster here...

Basically, i hadn't planned entering the brushless motor department for some time (till i could afford it) but a good friend of mine bought me my first brushless motor for my last birthday. Problem is, i have no idea what to build for it.

It's a 12mm/13mm Himark (Himaxx clone?) 4200kv. And i was thinking of building a NanoMirage, mainly for its simplicity, but scaling it up to fit a EDF50 or EDF55 in there, with this motor.

My question(s) is(are):
- Is this a good combination? should i go the EDF55, EDF50 or even EDF40?
- What sort of LiPo am i going to need for this? the motor only draws 6A, but will a 7.4v suffice? or should i go for 3s?

Thanks in advance everyone!
Nic.

Hey Nic,

Welcome to RCG!! We only have the right answers if you ask certain questions If the motor is 12mm, it can be used in an EDF40 or 50. But, that KV is really low for an EDF application. Most of us that are running brushless EDF40's are running the 5300 Feigao, 5800 Feigao or 5300 Medusa on 3 cell li-po's (I prefer 730 TPs). Now if you want to build that Mirage with a pusher setup, I'm running a 4k Feigao with a 3x3 prop on 480 TPs and it's quite a screamer! The 4000 +/- KV motors are also nice in geared applications, such as a DX-A turning a 10x4.7 on 3 cell 480's.

Some guys are running the high KV 12mm motors on EDF50's as well, but I haven't heard of anyone running one in a 55.

Hope that helps!

EDIT- I should clarify that the 4k motor I'm running with the 3x3 prop is not on a jet, it's on a mini hotliner. It should push a nano jet along nicely though.

Thanks heaps tres!

That's a pity, i was lookin' real forward to building that mirage. I'm also working on an Electric Orange Gee Bee at the moment, so maybe i'll put the geared 4200 in there to give it a bit more punch.

Putting that motor in a GB is it's best option. The Feiago's are as good as the Medusa's and would not hold up to 4s usege while the Medusa could. Not sure how a clone would do.

The 5300kv 12mm motors are what you are looking for to use in the little EDF's.
