Open pond

UPDATE: 7 SBODs have committed to the off-season "beer-can" race #2 Saturday, Nov 10, 1-3 (following the meeting & swap-meet).

5 SBOD's held off-season SBOD "beer-can" Race 1 today. Next SBOD beer-can Race 2 is November 10 following the membership meeting (during the swap-meet).

Light winds in the early races gave way to a gentle breeze towards the end making it a t-shirt day in GG Park(?!)....Who's got it better than that?! (Go Niners!)

Reminder: SBOD off-season "beer-can" racing is not sanctioned with no fees, food or prizes. Some of us need an SB hit once a month during the off season. 5 SB's were great but we're looking for 6 7 8 9 10. More are more better (sic)!

A big shout-out to Stephen, Bob & Jim with a special thanks to Ryan for the help dialing in 443's rigging. Some day 443 will lead the pack-Ha!

SB's out there, the pond is open-join us!

Take some pictures this Saturday please. Man this is cool. My main has a problem, the headboard is so stiff that it does not allow the top of the sail to assume the proper shape in light wind. Anyone else have this issue with their Rod Carr mains?? Ryan

"bent" mast-shroud tension as culprit

Mine did but its not the sail. It was the mast. The shrouds were asymmetrical. Spent Thurs. tuning rigging for straight mast. Problem gone.

Lay SB on her side and sight from top down to confirm you have a straight mast. Carr builds curve in luff and lists the amount on the sail head. Don't exceed that limit (when raking during a beat) that is built into his HT sail.

re beer-can race #2 Saturday...club swap-meet/beer-can race will overlap. We repositioned SBs for easy access during swap-meet hoping all 7 SBs show up (+2 top guns) If regular SB skippers turnout we could have 10... keep fingers crossed.
Gentlemen "splash your boat!"

It's not the sail. Remember the installation issue? Hope you take RC up on his offer to help. This is customer support (on steroids).

2nd off-season "beer-can" race

Thanks to the skippers of 7 SBs who joined the 2nd unofficial off-season "beer-can" race.

Light winds, clear skies and t-shirt weather made for an excellent day on the lake. A nice feature of unofficial off-season "beer-can" races is the relaxed atmosphere among skippers.

SB newbies (the author & friends) sometimes hand our Tx to a SB top gun to help fine-tuning the newbie's rigging. And, there's nothing quite as sobering as a newbie at the helm of the top guns fastie to reveal a lack of skipper skills. How better to bring newbies along than off-season "beer-can" racings with seasoned skippers?

So, more practice is more better for more newbies with more fasties. We do have our eyes on the prize.....2013 AMYA SB O/D Nationals at Spreckel's Lake during The America's Cup Race on The Bay. Who's got it better than that?! Nobody.

Mark your calendars: off-season SB "beer-can" (informal) Race #3 is Saturday, December 8, 1-3. RSVP helps with planning.

"Gentlemen, splash your boat!"

race #3-success!

The 3rd off-season SB beer-can race was a huge success meeting and exceeding expectations. We began thinking two SBs turning out for off-season "mock" races would be great. We had the biggest turn-out for this the third race.

Musicians talk about keeping their "chops" between jobs. But skippers work their tillers off in the off-season and its good thing. Some of us enjoy the casual atmosphere that allows for experimenting and testing with the hope of bring "back-packers" up in the scrum. In that regard, there is nothing quite like a top gun skipper taking a slow boat and tweaking it making it more competitive. Nor is there anything quite as humbling as a newbie at the helm of an establish fast boat struggling to keep up.

Of course all of this is made better when we find two skippers 80 miles east on the road 4 hrs joining in our fun. And their effort meant we had the added pleasure of getting a first hand look at the newly certified Robinson SB O/D hull, keel and rudder.

This new SB's workmanship is spotless AND affordable. They recently made the
Sacramento-San Diego drive (10 hrsx2) with the new SB O/D for its certification measurement-done deal. Nice work.

The Robinson package includes wood, hull, keel & rudder which reportedly sell for a $400. The deck is undergoing production-development. The deck and its pricing should be available shortly. The Robinson SB O/D, apparently, is now the only SB in production. We are fortunate to have an excellent SB source nearby.

The only short coming to beer-can 3, if there was one, was the absence of our alpha photographer. The ultra-light drafts during beer-can #3 on Spreackels Lake (GG Park) caused us to use short courses while mock-racing. Limited courses often meant 6-10 boats cluster inches from one another without the danger of collisions. Time after time remarkable pictures were there for the taking but sadly we didn't have our ace camera man to record some of the most spectacular later afternoon low angle light clusters of SB O/D this author has ever seen. There is, of course, January off-season beer-can race #4. More pictures are more better.

So, SBs near and far...off-season SB beer-can race #4 is Saturday, Jan 12, 1-3, Spreckels Lake, GG Park, San Francisco.

The lake's open...come on down!
