Anyone fly a glider?

After having my Skywalker sucked up into MASSIVE thermals a countless number of times at my flying location I started wondering if I shouldnt try to take advantage of it.. I've got an Aspire (glider, no motor) And am thinking of throwing a camera on that and high starting it. That glider will float on a butterflies wake, so I figure anything that can lift my 4lbs truck of a SW will fly the Aspire with no problem.. I could fly the glider LOS until I'm in a thermal then put on the goggles, just to make sure I can stay up (I'd launch LOS anyways..)

I've seen TONS of videos with people using motor gliders, but almost none of pure gliders. Any experiences here?

Ian (Daemon) flys a non-motor, pure glider.

Check his vids, awesome!

Might be a good time to invest in a variometer. That will be my next purchase

Ian has some great videos of his pure glider on the slopes. Here's just a couple of MANY he has posted on vimeo...

FPV - Mt. Zion - Paragliders/Hang gliders/Hawk (9 min 38 sec)

FPV in the EZ Glider catching a Big Thermal at NCAR (4 min 6 sec)

Yes I started FPV with a pure glider 3 years ago or so and while I do fly some powered
FPV aircraft as well now (Funjet/EZ*/Scoutjet/Tricopter), my go-to plane is still the
unpowered EZG on which I have hundreds of hours.
Most all of my relevant FPV videos are here.
http://www.vimeo.com/user286460/videos
Any video shot at Mt. Zion (all PG and HG related vids), NCAR, Super77th, Soar Utah,
and all but the most recent vids at Jones Pass and Weldon are with my unpowered EZG.

I don't use an OSD or a Vario, although I own both and certainly would recommend the
latter if you're planning to thermal from flat ground, or just marginal lift. I've just never
really needed it for the slopes and conditions I fly. Instead I rely on my
pan&tilt + headtracker to help me stay oriented and have a good feel for whether
I'm in thermal lift or not by how the plane reacts, which I can see visually. (thermal
lifts nose, or wing, or tail.. and I often level the plane and look straight out over the
wing tip to see see how the foreground and background are moving relative to
each other to tell me if I'm rising or sinking). If you fly the slope, it's important to fly
what you see, rather than fly the nose of the plane, which is almost never pointed
in the direction of actual travel. Thermal and slope soaring can be pretty bumpy
with a lightweight foam aircraft, so I do use a gyro to help smooth things out a bit.

I won't say it's easy, but if you can start from a slope and have a reliable P&T, then
it's easier than some think (so much so, some people think I have a powered plane ).

No, I don't think I've ever seen anyone FPV pilot a pure sailplane from a highstart.
If you can pull it off, it'll be quite unique.
Most people just power up to altitude with a motor and then turn it off for a while
(sometimes a long while). Keep in mind there've only been 3-4 FPV pilots in the world
to ever pilot a pure FPV sailplane and as far as I know, all but one of them don't do it
any more.

I think the FPV sailplane is a great idea !!! Get a vario, and you should be able to stay up all day

One day soon we are planning a balloon launch with an unpowered glider.

When video gets bad, the plane will be released.

A different camera and more powerfull fpv set will be used.

dlg with remote camera and transmitter systems testing, fly through football goal posts (3 min 14 sec)

there is no vario with lights, but you can DIY one. I wouldn't recommend that, though. the whole point of a vario is that it works through audio tones which will free up your eyes for watching the FPV feed.

shameless plug at this stage: I produce and distribute (and heavily use) the LastOneDown variometer (L1D). I have one in every model, even if it's a pure powered plane. to have a heightened sense for "air currents" is pretty neat when doing long range or high altitude stuff. that is completely beside the thermal-sensing ability, which is quite possibly the only way to keep your electric plane aloft for more than 90 minutes.

I haven't seen anyone hi-start his FPV, and I'm guessing it'll put considerable strain on your P&T rig. I'd either opt for a motor or launch from slopes.

Here's a L1D-assisted flight edited down to 3 minutes:

and here's the the first 40min of the flight in full:
