46th Annual Cumberland Soar for Fun ~ Nov 1-5, 2012

The HighPoint Aviation Airfield (same site for this event all of the past 45 years) is ready! Located on top of Knobley Mountain about 3 miles south of Cumberland, MD near Wiley Ford, WV. Here is the view from the field this evening:

We have set aside the dates Thursday, November 1 thru Monday, November 5, 2012 to give us a weather window of five days. Many times, all five days have provided excellent conditions.

This is a Fun Fly, no competition, no stress, just relax and fly until your neck gives out and/or your tonsils are too sunburned to continue.

With Great Regret:

Hurricane Sandy is shaping up to be a major weather event that will adversely impact the Cumberland, Maryland area this coming week. The storm is on track to be just north east of Cumberland on Wednesday bring with it heavy rain and wind.

At the very least, Thursday, November 1, 1012 will not be a flyable day on the HighPoint Aviation Airfield and most likely neither will Friday, November 2, 2012.

Saturday may be okay, but the current forecast for Sunday and Monday call for more rain. The wind speed and direction on Sunday and Monday are also shaping up to be poor conditions for flying.

If the amount of rain predicted occurs, there is a possibility that the mountain road to the airfield could be damaged and impassable without significant repair work. This has occurred is past rain events of lesser magnitude than what appears to be coming our way.

My best judgment at this time is to say the event is cancelled because of the poor weather conditions. If all passes and the conditions on the field (and road) are acceptable, we will open the field for flying on Saturday for anyone that wishes to come in on short notice.

We will post updates here as the week progresses to keep everyone informed.

The local Cumberland, Maryland forecast calls for heavy rain and wind starting tonight and going thru Tuesday night. By Wednesday, we should know if or how badly the road up to the field has been damaged. Thursday is supposed to see clearing and Friday, Saturday, and Sunday look to be favorable flying conditions (depending if we can get up to the field).

I live here and already have the days marked off from work, so if the conditions turn out favorable and if the road is okay, then flying is on for anyone that still wants to come in. We will need to just go day by day these next four days.

Best guess at this point...Thursday will not be a flying day (field too wet) but will hopefully help dry things out. Friday will be a slope flying day, if you like wind in your face, this will be your day. Doesn't look like an aerotowing day, but we might be wrong. Saturday thru Monday are looking good for aerotowing and flying in general.

If the road is okay and if the field gets dried out Thursday, then we have a four day event.

We have been up to the field and the road is open and field is in good condition. Thursday will be a drying out day with strong winds, but we should be good to go on Friday thru Monday. We will have a truck spreading gravel on the road early Friday morning, so the gate to the field will be opening around 10:00 am once that job is done.

Updates will be posted tomorrow.

Statistics for the 46th Annual Cumberland Soar for Fun

In spite of the weather and scheduling, 28 pilots from 9 states made the trip to the event. As it turned out, flying took place on all five days of the event schedule. 23 of the pilots were visitors and 5 were local. The states represented were Arizona, Connecticut, Illinois, Maryland, Michigan, New York, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and West Virginia.

All five days offered flying conditions that suited some type of soaring. The slope guys got plenty of good air and the giant scale aerotowing guys were able to operate at least some on Friday through Monday with Monday being a phenomenal day.

Thanks to all who came and made the event memorable!
