Our local club, PPMYC has been building our own one design 36R this spring. The first two boats are now in the water.
This was designed as an easy and cheap to build one design. Our club wanted to build boats and the current crop of 1 designs didnt fill the bill. A few boats have recently been discontinued (seawind) or been hard to get (ODOM) or had changes that make some more desirable than others (New bulb vics).
With the group build and using laser cut frames we built the boats for about $100 each + radio. They sail well and are sensitive to adjustments so they should be a good learning tool. The design is free to use (including production) and we do have a mold for the keels. The boats under construction have the lead molded right on the fin so its really an easy build.

The z36 is loosely based on the international 110 and the zephyr. The lines started as a 110 and was then made slightly wider and deeper to get the displacement correct for a 36r. A true scale 110 is only about 4 lbs displacement while the z36 is 9 lbs. also the angle of the fin and rudder were changed to get the bulb in the right place. The look of the fin and bulb are per the full sized boats.
The iom rig was chosen so that the cost is relatively low and readily available. The rig 2 was chosen as the largest rig so that a B rig is not needed until relatively higher wind speeds compared to some of the other one designs. Also the rigs/sails could be borrowed from iom's. current rigs are built per bantock iom rig plans.

Boat #2 is the third one in the water. Only 9 more to go. We have 12 under construction with 3 sailing.
