Knife's Monster 40mm development saga..... 2.3lbs thrust @ 1kw so far

With the obvious popularity of Dr Bret's Electrolyte micro jet, and since I own one, I've been playing with some options for different rotor/ motor combinations for the 40mm sized edf.

First, let me say that the stock unit that comes with the Electrolyte was developed by Bret and he did an awesome job of matching the power system to the design. My initial testing has shown that, with some careful reassembly, adhesive, and dynamic balancing, the stock components can be run successfully on 4s at roughly 28-30 amps and approx 500w. If you have the experience to do that, it should be all the power that the Electrolyte should ever need.

My development thread will be for power levels above 500w, how high is unknown at this point.

Applications for a fan of this sort would not be for current 35mm / 40mm airframes. Think more along the lines of the new lines of 50mm jets coming on the market. Advantages......smaller intakes/ no cheaters, thrust at or above normal 50mm fans, and higher efflux speed for faster, cleaner jets where you . are looking for max speed.

Finally, the ultimate application, would be to design a jet around the power system to take full advantage of its potential.

Grab your popcorn, the first leg of the long journey begins with a few important steps this weekend.

"Igore, would you prepare the laboratory please. I will be down directly "

Sorry, had to take a nap. Even mad scientists need their beauty sleep.

Here are a few pictures, the first experimental bench unit. I will post some numbers soon and video later today.

You have a good eye. Yes, initial test numbers look good. They are.....

14.4v, 45a, 648w, and 720g (27oz ) thrust. The exit diameter of the exhaust is 36mm.

Most guys know that I normally do testing without an exhaust tube. In this case it is needed because the motor is 28mm in diameter, the efflux air flow seems to get scattered without the exhaust tube.

This test was done with a Hobby Wing 40a esc. I'm going to see about going 5s with a larger esc. This is to get some data points related to this rotor / shroud combination.

Hmmm---An Electrolyte with a 2:1 power to weight ratio...Me likey!!!.......

Conversation at the flying field could go like this...."Anyone wanna see this plane accelerate while going straight up?!?!?!!???......."....

Yes, we have lift off! 5s numbers on the way.

Okay, 5s numbers are in..........

18.5v, 68a, 1.25kw, 1045g(37oz) thrust............ I'm just saying..........

Power junkies, get ready, there will soon be a post by someone saying... "That's not efficient. I can get 2.3lbs of thrust from my 70mm fan at 500watts. Why are you wasting power like that? What 40mm airframe can carry all that weight?"

Of course I've already answered those questions in the first post, but guys like that rarely read through the thread first, and if they do, they still don't get it.

I'll do video of 4s and 5s tonight. Stay tuned.

Keep in mind that this is not aimed at an airframe the size of the Electrolyte. This is for a larger jet which will carry larger lipos. Also, when battery technology catches up, I plan to be ready for it. 10 x current energy density, and you'll have all the flight time you can cope with at this power level.

4s Video. Notice the sweet sound of the 10b rotor. Not as efficient as the 7b Haoye, but sure sounds nice.

40mm family at 650w and 1.6lbs of thrust (0 min 50 sec)

And, the Big Kahuna, 5S VIDEO!

40mm fan @ 1.25kw and 1045g (2.3lbs) thrust (1 min 6 sec)
