Power supply knowledge.

I have a power supply question. I see supplys that say switching and others that don't say switching. Is this the switching like on a BEC like where if it's not a switching psu it's a linear psu??? And if so can you explain please. I understand why the switching effect would be needed in a BEC cause your stepping down voltage but with a power supply your pretty much making more power ??? I have not thought into this much and really hate asking as I like being the guy that has the knowledge. As for power supply's I've never had one besides a unit pulled out of a pc I have now it's a elements z power standard series 300 watt model ap-350x the main 12 volt rail says 12 volts at 15amps 180 watts. Is this a decent supply to convert. If it converts to being able to produce 12 volts at 12 amps reliably I would be totally happy. Can any one answer any of my questions please???

Here's a good explanation of the differences between linear and switching power supplies:

I believe the difference between "switching" and other is the means of achieving the output voltage. Traditionally power supplies used heavy transformers to convert the input AC voltage to the approximate output voltage. The switching power supplies use solid state (transistors, etc) and are much smaller and lighter.

no way you can make more power than you're putting into the PS unless you achieve greater than 100% efficiency.....

anyways liner just uses a transformer to either step up or step down the AC voltage at it's standard 50-60Hz.

a switching PS will convert that 50-60Hz to something way, way higher so that it can use a much, much smaller transformer to step the voltage up or down. if using a DC input then that is also converted to a high frequency AC before being transformed.

you can usually tell linear from switching by the weight of the unit compared to the power capability. they won't always say "switching" or "linear" on the label.

I have a chance to get hobbykings 540 supply for a decent price. It's been tested and works well. Is this a decent supply. Is it a switching unit.

It should work just fine at producing 12V at 12A after conversion.

It's probably an acceptable quality power supply. Certainly not in the same league as a server supply but should work just fine.

And yes, like nearly all power supplies that are designated for hobby use, it is indeed a switching supply.

Thanks very much.
