Build Log
1/6 Sig J-3 Piper Cub 71"

Well, its been a while since I've built a glow plane, the last was a Kadet Senior about a year ago. I guess I don't have much to say, I'll just be posting here as the build goes on.

Well, here's a pic to show that I've at least started.

For those, if any, that are interested, I will be using a Thunder Tigre GP42 engine with a 10x6 prop in this Piper Cub. I am attempting to make it relatively scale, but not at the expense of excessive time. I don't want to build it for 2-5 years, so as much detail as I can put into it in a reasonable amount of time, I shall try to make it scale-like. The wings are going to be a two piece removable assembly so that it will be more transportable with some kind of tube spar holding them together.

I now have both fuselage sides built and the right side has a scale working door.

Sig's 1/6 scale Cub is a great plane, Eric.

I worry a bit, though, about putting a .42 on it. Their present Cub design is an update of Chuck Hollinger's, published in Jan., 1955, Air Trails magazine and kitted by Berkeley, then Sig. Chuck used a .19 in his. RC gear was heavier then, but flying was relatively sedate.

I have the present Sig Cub with an OS .26 4-stroke. I like it a bunch - realistic flying is at half throttle, 2/3 with floats - but have to admit most folks would go for a bit more power.

The only real problem might be getting it down without having to kill the engine. Make certain you have a really good low idle. And at the top end, you'll have unlimited vertical!

Have fun!

Haha, indeed. I tried using this engine in my Kadet Senior and it was a tad bit underpowered so I figured it would work good in this plane. I don't plan on ever flying WOT cause it would be overkill, but it does idle very well, and I love the sound when its rumbling at the low end. I'm not a fan of its high pitch whining at full throttle. I hope it'll fly great at 1/2 throttle so its more scale like. I like also like that a 10x6 appears almost scale on this cub and I'm thoroughly enjoying building this kit. Thanks for the info!

Been working on it a little, not much though, been busy with the Army lately. However, I did manage to make the landing gear near scale like with elastic shock absorbers. I'll get pics later tonight hopefully, or as soon as I can.
