An ALES glider for the budged-constrained? maybe?

http://hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store...15mm_ARF_.html

Always looking for a more inexpensive way to lure new members to our motor glider competition and "be competitive"... could this be it?

Additional Information (4/27/2015)

WEIGHT (from Yabe's post):

Total weight of all parts were as follows:

Fuse
Fuse Boom
All wing sections
Rudder
Stab
Canopy
-------------------------
Total weight of the above components: 1720 grams ... no boxes or plastic bags are included in that total.
I didn't weigh the separate parts like the joiners, fiber glass dihedral braces, control horns, clevises, and other small parts.
And of course, when one starts to add motor, battery(s), ESC, servos, the weight starts to approach the all up flying weight that HK
quotes in their video or on their sales page.

I don't know how it is possible to offer this sailplane at that price. Assuming that it can actually fly and hold together it certainly looks like fun to try out and also to outfit it with inexpensive power package. It might be possible to have an ALES glider for what, $400? Hard to believe such a package would be money well spent.

People do use modified Radians on ALES competitions and sometimes score good. Is it a pipe dream to expect this one to compete against the Pulsars? at that price ?
oh makes me wanna get one just to see...

Question would be though... buy the cheap plane and put cheap electronics in it? or also put cheap electronics?

More and more of the reviews I read of the HK products are pretty good. So I would outfit the entire thing from HK.

SWAG numbers

Plane $260
Motor - $40
ESC - $40
Servos - 6 - $150
Misc - $70
Battery - 2 - 90
Prop and spinner - $50

Approx total - $700 plus shipping

Add your favorite receiver and you are in the air.

Does not mention pushrods or control horns so I can't tell if they come with the glider or not. That would be in the Misc along with wire extensions, switch and whatever.

Is the build any good? who knows?

Contest worthy? Who knows?

All up will proably be around 96 ounces based on the specs, about 6 pounds. Certainly no featherweight.

They suggest a very large motor and battery. Recommended motor is 42 mm and up to 1300 watts on 5S. Even at 96 oz that is over 220 watts per pound. That is crazy power. 4-5S and 3300 to 5000 mah. Wonder if it needs it or balance or if you could use a smaller pack.

Posts by users say on 4S pack the recommended motor puts out about 670 watts on a 14/x7 prop. Maybe a 15X7 gets it up to about 750 watts which would be around 125 watts/pound which is a good ALES target.

On a 14X10 5S 900 watts.

As a comparison you could us Gracia 3.5M.

Anther will Probably be 20 ounces heavier. Projected weight on a 3.5 Gracia is around 76 ounces. Ather around 96 ounces.

From a club member,

Quote:
Budget???

The model is $260 plus shipping from China

It needs:
- Battery
- six servos
- Motor
- ESC
- Spinner with folding prop

Sounds to me like another $125, minimum, depending on choice of components.

No information on the airfoil
2600 grams = 5.6 pounds before the battery and that sounds heavy to me. My 3 meter Buzzard is 42 ounces ready to fly.

The bolt on parts and four part wing are convenient, but the joiners look like wood, not CF and that gives me pause.

Are you going to build it with all HK stuff? Just curious what you plan to use for servos and motors and stuff.

Most likely.

But I have learned to not select the recommended parts on the product page. To often they are not correct.

I will wait for the model, then choose the parts I want.
