We have a few, not as many as you may think, but none of them the epic ridge with smooth flow over the top, huge flat open space in front, and great landing. Ngaio is about the best we have, and not the greatest. The top is nowhere near smooth, so the shear tends to get a bit messy. It's still the best we have at the moment, but probably the biggest problem is that it has a ridge in front - further away than the one at Long Gully, but probably still close enough to have an impact. the ridge at Lower Hutt seems to have miles of Hutt Valley in front, so with a bit of luck might have smoother flow. I had another look at the ridge for southerlies, and it might actually work. Not quite as smooth for airflow from the south as from the north, but may still be good.

Not at all. There are hills and wind galore but finding one that works is like getting blood out of a stone

Sounds like around here. In fact we were just discussing how easy it to find a good hill: look for a ridge with power lines right in the middle of it. Those power line installer guys really know what to look for in a DS hill! Access is the other issue, unless of course you are using an unknown public easement

Yeah, access is important, I was showing Jono a site a bit north from where I live - looks epic, if a bit too much west, otherwise really amazing. Problem, no road or even foot path to the top, and it's about 250-280m high, so no chance of climbing that with 20kg worth of kit.

a boat is not the go as we want wind and lots, so the sea will be very ruff.

Moirs Hill session

Kerry and I had a couple of hours at Moirs Hill on Sunday 20th July.
This is just a little of the video we took.

It was late in the day and very cloudy, plus my mobile didn't seem to
like the low light much.... but it was well worth the bush walk through
a very muddy track to enjoy the perfect wind direction for the hill.

Yes indeed, once it gets to 30-40 knots in the right direction I'll take it out, although I almost don't want to, as it looks so nice and there's a good chance I'll go home with bits and pieces or perhaps just a memory... given the density of the bush at Moirs

After a bit of messing around with nose weight and battery position, it's now about 1.65Kg and I found on the maiden flight that it's not comfortable in lighter winds. Alex indicated 25kts minimum for a Windburner with that sort of loading and I think he's quite correct.

Here are a couple of longer vids from Sunday 20th at Moirs.

Cheers
