Scale Build-Off 3 51" span Ilyushin Il-4

Well its been a long time since I rolled my own so here is my entry in the contest an Ilyushin Il-4. The Il-4 was a variant of the earlier DB-3 long range medium bomber by the same company. This variant first flew around 1940 and was used as a long range bomber, torpedo bombing and mine laying. they were used until the end of WW2. My version will be around 1300mm span and made of Balsa and foam.

Welcome aboard, Luke! Looks like a unique subject; kind of like the offspring of a DC-3 and a Japanese Betty...

Nice! You don't see that one every day at the field.

Started construction on the fuselage, I'm using a balsa centre structure which is clad in foam blocks then carved and sanded to shape.

There's an Ilyushin in there somewhere.
Hopefully it's not just an illusion.

Hi all, Just a few pics of my progress. Thought I would do the molds for vac-forming, its part of my day job, so I must be very motivated to do it. I started with a 6.4mm frame which is then filled in with more balsa and carved to shape. They are all .5"/12.7mm taller so they can be adjusted to shape. The final step is to coat the whole thing in epoxy resin and sand when cured. I will be double vaccing to get a real good result, needed given the Ilyushin's large amount of glazing. The final pic shows the turret mold in place, its about 2"/50mm in diameter.

Well life got in the way for a bit but now I can do some more so here is a wing. the frame is very basic with only 4 ribs total, a l/e section and 2 spars all made from 5mm balsa and skinned with 3mm depron. Its a pretty quick way to make a hollow smooth skinned wing that's quite resistant to torsional flexing. Tons of space inside to because of the scale thickness. It looks quite large with the fuselage on it but there are still the nose and tail cones to be added.

More glacial progress! got around to making and installing control surfaces on the Il-4. I made these again with balsa spars with 3mm depron skins wrapped around them. Since the surfaces are a bit far from the fuselage I decided to use internal horns. The elevators are joined with a piece of carbon rod with a plywood horn. The rudder is different in that it has a piece of brass tube slid onto piano wire that turns the Rudder and tail wheel (the picture is much clearer). All the surfaces are hinged with mylar hinges.

Got a bit more done. I made the nacelles out of 3mm ply and 10mm sq for the retract bearers. All these parts are bonded to the spar and l/e section with epoxy. The nacelles are going to be clad the same way as the fuselage was. The Ilyushin shape is slowly coming out.
