Plug progress

The primer caused a minor delayed but finally the fusleage plug is almost finished. These days my primer of choice is sandable duplicolor available at Pep boys along with the red stuff. Unfortunately the nearest Pep Boys is over an hour away so against my better judgement I decided to try a locally available krylon "primer". To make a long story short, it never seems to completely dry and it always gums up in the sandpaper. Fortunately a local hobby shop saved the day. They have some expensive Tamiya primer that is amazing. Its $10 but it really works well (dries fast and sands well with red stuff). I wouldn't use it for a large project but for this little EDF project its great.

You can also see that the canopy hatch has been removed from the fuselage and will be molded separately. Its a little more work to do this but it makes life so much easier down the line. The hatch itself will get molded after the fuselage mold.

P.S. Congrat to CN for having his 3rd child. Hope Mrs. CN and CN Jr. are doing well!

Very nice work pdawg! Hope the mold works out looking as good with out too much trouble.

The worst primer is Rustolem, took 2 weeks to dry on a fiberglassed ME-262 I built , before it stopped gumming my sandpaper. Talk about patience being tested. I used some cheap stuff from Walmart that worked good on a fiberglass cowl I made, sanded nice but is not foam safe.

Keep up the great work!

I kinda like the F-20 look, but either way it's cool.

That spot between the intake and canopy could probably use some carbon tow in the finished fuse. It will be a weak spot, but not too bad if you leave some flange around the canopy opening. I only say it because I've seen other models break there on ugly landings.

I'm fortunate that more and more stores around me have the primer we need. Many of them say sandable, but they're foolin' ya. I mean steel is sandable too right?

I only like the Duplicolor that says high-build formula. It's pretty close to the old laquer that we loved so dearly and you can actually dry sand it. Wish it came in white though. I was getting a white primer in a blue can but it's gone.

Steve,

The Electrolyte fuse will definitely have a flange around the canopy for strength and ease of construction. The old yellow kits don't have a flange around the hatch or the canopy and its so flimsy it drives me crazy! The old pep boys brand Varsity primer was the best sanding primer on earth. It was the bomb! It also had a blue can. It was a sad day when they stopped carrying it! I think it was an EPA thing.

BTW, I'm still sanding down the Electrolyte plug. Its about ready for 400 grit sandpaper.

Yep, that's the one. It was a sad day when I couldn't find it any more. I'm too lazy to use a real spray gun very often or else I'd probably use some sort of polyester primer.
