I want to paint my Super Cub. Want to go Cream and Deep Red like a Taylorcraft.

What type of paint takes well to foam.??

water based acrylic paint does well on foam. Stuff like this:

Ditto to the Acrylic paints. Walmart has them also but less colors and price is same so might as well go to Michaels.

I put them on straight with no water. Usually a light coat to get some color on foam and then final over that.

I use the little foam brushes to apply.

The guys who fly foam at our field have been using Valspar aerosol from Lowes. Lots of colors availible.

In all honesty, anything water based works absolute wonders on foam. I've used everything from Krylon Fusion paints to $0.99 cans of Wally World spray paint with success. Just make sure it's water based before you spray it on.

And if you're not sure, find an inconspicuous section of foam and try it out, or use a piece of scrap. Also, keep a good distance when spraying it on- the Aerosol can actually eat at the foam, plus giving it a few coats rather than one thick coat will give you a better color spread.

The spray paints from Tamiya and Testors work well too for a lightweight finish.

I did a surfboard with artist quality acrylic paint. It was EPS foam and then fiber glass over the painted foam. In the photo you can barely tell its been glassed.

Wow, I was misled on this question.

I went with the waterbase acylic. It chips and peels big time.!! Not cool.

Hate to ask but... Is there anything in the way of a sealer that will preserve the acrylic paint.??

maybe your foam was already coated. Sand lightly first? Also there is a wide variety of paint brands. You have to find what works. At least it didn't melt your foam.

I lightly sanded. Maybe not enough. I'm going with it. It looks good.

What makes it tough is that once I put one color down I can't I can't mask it. The tape pulls the paint off. Reading glasses and a steady hand is imperative.

Molded foams use a mold release agent when processed. Clean the plane off with alcohol first.

You can use any spray paint from the hardware or variety store if you seal the plane first. Some spray shellac from Home Depot with seal the foam and it is also alcohol based and won't attack the foam and dries really fast. After it is sealed any spray paint will do and by cleaning the mold release off first you shouldn't have an adhesion issue.

Thank you for that Payne. The fuselage and tail are all but done. I'll do what you say on the wing and hope for a better result.

I'm not totally disgusted with the result. I'm just saying... it could be better.

Well, here she is all dabbed up in her new colors. Thought I would post here as I did in my "newb" thread that some of you may have missed. It needs some decals. Any suggestions.?? I really don't want to paint them on.
