Rules is Rules

Found this while scanning the Callisto 82 article from Model Aviation's October 1982 issue.

Skybench Aerotech has a lot of Soaring History in the web site:

How many of you dreamt about planes in these ads?
Notice the prices? $114.95 for a Hobie!!! $74.95 if you wanted to cover it yourself!! Good luck seeing a basket case Hobie for twice that.
The next one done I am going to build one of these days, the Craft Air Leo, looks an awful lot like a Sailaire without the pod and boom on the planes.
I am also going to finish the scratch built Nebula. Need to final sand a wing half and the fuselage.
There are Super Condor plans around here someplace in the collection.

Hobie Hawk for Christmas

Speaking of the Hobie Hawk.
Not much chance of flying around my neck of the woods at Christmas time but it does warm one up a bit.

I use to go to AHC when they were on 22 st, NYC. He has moved to somewhere in NJ, not far from from the Lincoln Tunnel.... Tunnely Ave (sp). Got my first Futaba radio from Marshel the son of the founder of AHC. Yes, I too would scab those ads and dream.

AHC had their full page ads in most model magazines every month and they were very reliable with my few mail orders with them.

BTW, that looks like a Futaba radio. top center, 2 channels for $98.95, a good deal back then!

Speed! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! !

It seems that speed has been on the sailplane pilots mind for some time!
Seems slow compared to DS but this was 24 years ago.

How I wish I was into soaring as much as I was into girls back then.

Please fell free to add any history and pictures you may have.
It doesn't matter if it is wide spread or club news.
That is the idea of this thread!

Flipping through the pages of the July 1977 issue of Model Builder this caught me eye.

Foam FF Turned RC Sloper

Don Edberg, anybody remember him? I read a lot of his stuff and will be re-reading it again along with several other columnist like Al Diog also mentioned in this article.
Anyway Don took a foam hand chuck and turned it into a sloper.
A C/L model was also converted to slope showing that there is a lot of ingenuity in the soaring arena or boredom.

I remember both Don Edberg and Col. Thacker. I met Col Thacker at the 1974 SOAR Nats and Don Edberg at Visalia about 20 years ago. In the early 90's, I used to take pictures at the nats for Don to use in his RCM column. I last saw him about 10 years ago when he came to Huntsville on company business. Don Vickers and I used to meet him for supper when he was in Huntsville. I also met Al Doig at the 1980 nats where I shared my tent with him.

I could not agree more, and as an added bonus, seeing all you guys contributing here makes me feel like a relative newcomer and not nearly as old as I sometimes feel.

Carl Goldberg 1982 Nats

I met Carl Goldgerg at the 1982 Nats. I had just finished flying 2-meter and was changing the winglets for the Standard class wing tip when Carl stopped to discuss the winglet. I put the winglet back on the Spica and spent an enjoyable few minutes explaining how they worket. I didn't know anybody was taking pictures until I received the photo in the mail a few weeks later. Unfortunately, I have forgotten who took the pictures.
