Bird Springs Pass (BSP)

I have been eyeing this spot for a few years now. The access looks reasonable, but the ridgeline is a bit convoluted. Now that there is a weather station on the hill above the ridge, it has been consistently the windiest spot in the southern Sierra area (Weldon - Jawbone). It would favor a West to Northwest wind whereas Weldon prefers Southwest to West, but the presence of a sensor allows us to know when it is on fire.

Currently gusting to 67 there now.

Here we're getting gusts to 122 with sustained over 90 over the Sierra Crest (Slide Mtn, NV)

I might swing by Red Mountain in the morning and then pop over to Bird Springs Pass before jetting up to Weldon tomorrow morning. I noticed the wind was very light this morning so I imagine Joe didn't get a test flight in at Bird Springs if went there.

The story as I understand it is that Bruce Tebo and Joe Manor went to Bird Spring Pass in the morning on Friday 1/20/2012. Of course, the wind gods decided to drop the wind down to 20mph with gusts to 24mph from the cranking 60-70mph winds the night before. Joe flew a D60 and noted the massive front side lift. But the wind speed was not strong enough for a defined shear line and so the DS was not very good at the lighter wind. They packed up and went to Weldon.

Part II of the story is very exciting. Jason Lilly and Alan Cocconi went to Bird Springs Pass today around 1pm. The wind was gusting to 112mph and averaging 80-90mph. Snow was on the ground and in the air. It was cold with sub-freezing temperatures and wind chill. Jason flew his Thundertaker II because "it was the only plane I had that could fly in that much wind". Jason launched and almost crashed on the first pass since he didn't know where the shear was or what circuit to fly. He quickly figured it out got speed readings over 400mph within about 3 laps and got a peak pitot speed of 448mph. Radar wasn't giving many readings for some reason so the only speeds are from the pitot system (thank God he had that installed or we would never know the potential of Bird Springs Pass). Alan saw that visibility was about to diminish due to an approaching blizzard so Jason landed and they packed up.

Thanks to the efforts of Jason and Alan, we have a new 400mph+ hill that seems to have a ton of wind all the time. If its blowing tomorrow, we may get another flight report from Bruce Tebo who hopes to catch it good.

I just realized that Bird Springs Pass is the safest place we fly in SoCal because there are no freeways or homes near it. Mars is safe too, but there are expensive wind mills that could take damage in a freak and bizarre 1-in-a-billion accident.

My apologies, I was wrong

Its amazing to see Bird Springs Pass come on so high. Marlan and i had been out there several times in mild wind, and ended up much better off at Weldon, so we never gave it a second thought. And i had told people that they were wasting there time by thinking of going there. Now i see Jason with 448 at Bird Springs, and congratulations for going past me by the way. So here it is - my apology for not being aware of something in my backyard, and discouraging Bird Springs.

John

Ps Congratulations Jason!
