Slowstick "Ultralight" revisited...

Some of you may remember my old Slowstick Ultralight from a while back (5 years!?)...

Since that plane, I've built and flown quite a number of different FPV platforms, but no more ultralights... I always enjoyed that little plane, so when I saw a Slowstick conversion kit for sale online, I had to have it to rebuilt my FPV ultralight. Here's the end result:

And the maiden flight:

Slowstick Ultralight FPV (8 min 15 sec)

Really looking forward to some calm mornings/evenings for some low and slow flights!

Awesome! Looks like a great flyer! I really liked that camera perspective! What camera was it? The colors looked very nice (better than my PZ0420). If it was the PZ0420, could you post your settings?

I've been flying my heavily modified Slow Stick night FPV with a PZ0420 with a GIANT LLL (Low Light Lens) on it from RMRC. FUN! Especially since that is about the only time it's ever calm where I live...sigh.

It's a PZ0420 "clone" with a 2.8mm lens from Sierra R/C. Camera menus look identical, there are minor differences in the PCB layout, and a mix of ceramic and tantalum capacitors vs. mostly tantalum on the "real" PZ.

The box it shipped in had this same part# on it:

Yep, that's the one! I know he was low on remaining kits when I ordered, not sure if there's any left or not. I don't see it on his webpage right now.

Another flight yesterday evening, while it was nearly calm. Fun little plane!

Thats very cool Keith!!

I remember your first one... didn't you have a little fender on the front wheel on that first SS Ultralight?

Edit,... ahh yes you did...just noticed the first pic...

Yeah, I put the fender on the front wheel after flying that one early in the morning a few times, the front tire would throw water up onto the camera lens while taking off! lol

One more quick flight yesterday, this time in a little bit of wind. It sure gets bumped around, especially taking off and landing, but it's still quite a bit of fun!

More Ultralight FPV (6 min 27 sec)

I also ran the battery down all the way this time, I only got 20 minutes in the air. Not the 25-30 I was hoping for. This was spread over two flights (one short one before this one in the video) and with a couple of full power climbs just playing around. Maybe I could stretch it to 25 minutes at a steady cruise speed, but I'll consider 20 minutes my safe point. That means range is a bit limited with this setup since it's so slow. I'm guessing somewhere between 1.5 and 2 miles is about the best I can do with some reserve. I guess if I really wanted to I could hang another battery in the bottom at the CG, I know it will carry the weight easily, but if I want to go long range I've got much better planes for that... lol

The slowstick is still my favorite airplane. I have built so many different configurations, trike, floats, flying hull to edf...had to order this kit. What motor/prop combo are you using here?

Glad to see a classic....The original airspeed indicator was genius as well.

lol I'd forgotten about that "airspeed indicator". It was good in theory, not very useful in practice... haha Good times!

Howemd, the motor on here is a Dynam 2815 1100kv with an 8x4 slowfly type prop, scaveneged from a Skybus twin. The other one ended up on my old Easy Star. lol I'm sure it's not the most efficient or ideal motor, but it was in the parts box so I used it. It's a nice match as far as power goes, it seems happy cruising a little below 1/2 throttle, and full throttle gives a nice climb. It takes off at about 1/2 throttle with no trouble. I've flown quite a few different motors on Slowsticks, they're not picky at all and will fly on just about anything. I'm guessing something with a little lower KV than mine and a 9 or 10 inch prop would be ideal. I don't mind the smaller 8" prop though, less prop to look at when I'm flying!

Here's a quick video that runs through all the gear and placement. A guy who's building one asked for more details on YouTube, so I made this:
