Build Log
Mooring Tug 3 from Hamburg, Germany

Seems like a good time to.......

Build a model of a Mooring Tug !

Motivated to do this one for years, there was a post here form a Gent who scratch built one of these ( the picture of the built model is his )( http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1746657 ) several years ago and now finally a kit has been Masterfully produced by a German model manufacturer, Mr. Sievers:

http://www.modellbau-sievers.de/Neuh...Neuheiten.html

He does fine work, the kit is well organized, shipped well.

The hull comes with a stuffing tube liner integrated in the hull ( common now in hulls coming from Europe, see the Opduwer build ).

First steps are the least fun, all the nasty glass work of opening the mooring eyes and wash ports in the hull.

Our outdoor "Project Manager" Cat can be seen working Very hard ( ).

After that, sand smooth the inner walls that will be visible above the deck line ( the nastiest part ) ...

Why post a build log ????

For Fun ! ( That's why I come here .. ( ).

Off we go then ~

Great Tim, that is a good looking hull, nice glass work.
I have to agree the worst part cleaning the hull and sanding the inner hull walls "Bulwarks" is the worst part. my fav is the details!

A Long way to go ......

It will be a fun and challenging build for Sure ~

Several of the real Tugs were built back in the 80's by Schiffswerft Johann Ílkers in Germany, we find clear records of at least three but there may be more.

They are still working hard today, carrying heavy lines and taking care of various other general work duties.

Hope so, I have NO brazing skills at all, I will be hopefully enlisting the help of another RCG member whom has bought the second of the two kits that were imported ( he may reveal himself in time ) ......

Doesn't the tube just fold ( collapse ) when you bend it at the turns ?

timif you use some modellers pipe benders, and anneal the brass before you bend to a cherry red you should have no probs. I use my set quite regularly............the other way is to fill the pipe with fine sand so it won't collapse, but the pipe springs are easier and more effective.
