unconventional ways of decreasing weight.

So, after a couple of days of fiddling with my very old and beat up kodak zi8, I was able to bring it from 136grams to 73 grams. This is about half the weight, so I just thought I would go over the process a bit. Sadly for me the camera may still be too heavy for my double horse 9116, but this may be a possibility for people who have maybe a T rex 450 and want a lighter camera than the go pro, but still want to be able to shoot full 1080p* movies.

The camera started out looking like the above at 136 grams.

It got down to about 102, but I really could not find any more ways to decrease the weight, without taking anything major away, so I had to take out the monitor inside. This meant from now on I would only have the wheel to navigate throughout the screen and set preferences. Basically, from now on, I had to memorize all the controls.

At this point I had taken out everything of considerable weight and it just became a plastic frenzy frenzy. I.e. remove anything thats non-metal!

My final weight was about 70 grams, but I added about an extra 3 grams in foam on the outside for protection. By now I still had all the major controls, but I could not see what was being filmed nor know what pixel count was (720,480,1080) I just memorized the screen so I would always be in 1080p.

I will post my first video in about a week of the first flight with the DH 9116. My plan is to remove the canopy and LED lights and pray that this thing can get high enough to take some nice ariel shots. Say 100-300ft, and then quickly bring it down. Hopefully the cold boston air will keep the motor temp down so it won't short at 100ft. (talk about nightmare at 100FT!!!!)

We will see, stay tuned.

The little camera is full HD, kind of amazing actually. I did something like this with my old Kodak but I couldn't get it to operate after I took it all apart - it was broken before I took it apart, and I never did find the problem.
