Yeah I hear you , actually the Grass at the field is way better these days but it used to be very uneven with lots of bumps and I got used to land in the runway , Will land on grass next time.

The USA guys landed on the runway at the worlds and had tape (kevlar i think) on the bottom of their models. The Russians also started it towards the end of the event as well.

They broke less props than us and it was a good way of landing.

I still would not do it but it works well for them.

Rob, we used the RC car chassis protector sheets as well.

As to why? For us it is easier and less wear and tear on the airplane. We had some broken boom issues in the past and were just trying to eliminate model repair during rounds. Props is another issue. We tried to get the prop horizontal on landing so is to not scrape the runway, sometimes it required multiple "blips" of the throttle to reposition it.

I have landed in the grass in many past World Champs and some local fields. Broken props, broken firewalls and broken tail booms were all experienced. I came back from Muncie, tore off my RC Car chassis protector (helped with a heat gun), put a new one on, and it looks as good as new. Since Muncie had a very nice, long asphalt landing strip, I kept the nose up high and bled off all the speed before touching down. Only had to change props once or twice but they are still good for practice flying. If the grass is putting-green or fairway short, then it's not a big deal. Medium length, clumpy grass is bad news for fixed props and sometimes airframes. The typical dirt runways around here with occasional rocks/pebbles are worse than the asphalt. Your mileage may vary

I love the chassis protector stuff! It's kinda pricey for a small sheet of the stuff, but one little strip lasts a long time. The only drawback is that it's like putting ice skates on your plane. It slides forever on asphalt.

I have had in my hands Viper with 5S G3 Hyperion 2200 mha battery and it barely fit.
And it is not fattest batteries as we all know.
