SMC True Spec Flight packs.

Coming soon SMC True Spec Flight packs.

As most of you know C rates have basically gone out of control in the past few years and are basically just used for marketing to try and sell packs. SMC is well known as a leader in the RC car Lipo market as we offer very good packs at very good pricing. We decided to bring our quality packs to the flight market. We will start with a few models and expand the line as it grows.

Since C rates have become useless we decided to come out with our own rating system that will mean something. We have done allot of research and communicated with some very well respected guys on RC Groups who have done allot of battery testing and helped us better understand what is important to the flight customer.

All SMC packs are built by what we feel to be one of the best factories in China. Critical materials are imported from Japan to optimize cycle life and consistency from batch to batch.

SMC True Spec Rating:

Every pack will be rated by Amps. In theory amps is pretty much the same as C rate but the difference with our Amp rating is that we're actually listing how we get the results so anyone can do the same testing and confirm our rating. This means true results you can count on.

All testing is done at 22 degrees Celsius 72 Fahrenheit. The pack and room must be at this temperature for testing.

All testing will be done on a 3S pack to limit the watts when testing but this will still provide more heating than a single cell or a 2S pack.

mAh: The pack must provide the rated mAh under a 1C discharge down to 3V cutoff per cell. This is tested on a iCharger 4010 Duo set at 1C charge to 4.20V charge termination.

Amp Rate: The pack must handle the Amp rate and the cell voltage must stay above 3.5V per cell for 50% or more of the discharge.

Temperature: The pack must be 75 degrees Celsius 167 degrees Fahrenheit or lower after a 85% discharge at the claimed Amp rate. The reason why we use 75 degrees Celsius is due to a constant Amp discharge in lab conditions actually gets the pack hotter than it would in actual flight. We use 85% of the packs rated mAh to cutoff the discharge as we feel packs shouldn't get discharged lower than this under load to maximize cycle life.

The first 2 models we're releasing are as follows:

Part# 2370-3S1P
mAh: 2300
Amps: 70
Voltage: 11.1 (3S)
Weight: 178gr/6.20oz
Height: 23.25mm/0.92in
Width: 34.7mm/1.37in
Length: 106.5mm/4.19in
Price: 24.95

The graph below is the 2300-70A-3S pack at 77 amp discharge down to 3V per cell. The pack stayed above 10.50V for 1582mAh.

Part# 2865-3S1P
mAh: 2800
Amps: 65
Voltage: 11.1 (3S)
Weight: 206gr/7.27oz
Height: 26.5mm/1.04in
Width: 34.7mm/1.37in
Length: 106.5mm/4.19in
Price: 29.95

These 2 new packs will be listed and available for pre-order early next week. The 2865-3S1P is due in around the 1st week of May. The 2370-3S1P will be available in early June.

Re: Amp rate. Are you saying that you test the pack at the full amp rate?

Yes to determine the rating the pack must be able to sustain a full constant discharge and retain 3.5V per cell for 50% or more of the discharge and not get hotter than 75 degrees Celsius with a 85% discharge.

Just a thought. If you want them pushed you should have done a 2865-4S1P for ef1 pylon racing. Trusting that would come in below the 325g weight limit.

Actually our first 2 models are designed to compete directly with the 2200-3S style packs. This means you can take our 2800 at the same size as a good 2200 and get more flight time. The 2300 is cheaper but is a great pack for the price and it's light for the performance it offers.

It's easy for us to have the 2800 built as a 4S and the weight would be around 270 grams but the first batch of cells is already built as 3S so we will consider doing some 4S with the next batch.

I have 26 years of battery testing experience but I must admit I'm not familiar with RC flight as I'm a RC car racer. I do believe my battery knowledge and desire to sell the best possible packs at the best price will help me get into the flight market and I feel my rating system is unique and will be helpful.

I know every month there is a new super battery coming out with all kinds of marketing and hype but I want to release high quality packs with no gimmicks and false claims. You can run my packs at the advertised rate and it will handle it. The pack will have no voltage sag and will stay at 3.5V per cell or higher for 50% + of the discharge. I think it's time for someone to finally have a rating that customers can rely on and not some stupid rating that no one tells you how they get or if they can truly get this rating.
