Concern typically is landing more than taking off... specially for the first flights when you are not yet accustomed to the model...

I would still want a big runway for learning. So maybe skis because frozen lakes offer plenty of space

We don't have any frozen lakes in Australia so I wouldn't know, but wouldn't wheels still work fine on a smooth frozen lake? (unless there's a layer of snow on it) I wonder if there'd be any problem keeping it straight on takeoffs, but I would imagine it would be ok, and with TV on there's plenty of rudder authority.. just might have to keep your steering/rudder inputs very minimal to avoid spinning out!

hehe plenty of dried-up salt lakes that are dead flat though, if you head out into the desert a while!

I don't know if you've been on a frozen lake or not, but they are not usually that smooth and usually covered with snow
