Slofly SOC 400 MAH 3s Battery First Impressions
For quite a while I've been running Kokam 340 3s batteries on my small foamies (one from Slofly as well) along with various sub-ounce motors. It's always nice to get more oomph out of a battery, especially at relatively low cost. So I was tempted to try one of the SOC batteries, especially since the Kokams are no longer available and mine are starting to show their age.
First impression is "wow" compared to the Kokams. My best K340 test on a 20T 25g CDROM, when new, was: 13.3oz thrust @ 5.81amps 9.22volts 53.6w
Using the same motor, my first result was 15.1oz thrust (!) @ 6.64a holding 10.51volts. That's an overwhelming improvement, though a bit more current than the 15C rating allows, so I'm in "burst" mode.
Perhaps even more telling is a motor I'd been pushing to get 12.5 ounces out of (a Komodo KH-257 17-turn dLRK) and tweaked up to 14.1 at its very best. The first test produced 14.5 oz @ 5.89 amps while holding 10.85 volts!
So I stuck it on a plane and the performance difference was instantly obvious. The only remaining question is, how long will these relatively inexpensive batteries hold up? (The 400 MAH model -- which will soon be somewhat upgraded, I'm told -- clocks in at just under $21. Larger sizes are not much more. I think it's another dollar for the 500).
Don't know at this point, of course, but I hope it does well. Check back to this space if you're curious.
