Can anyone identify this plane

Hi All I picked up this plane last week for cheap but I can not Identify it. looks like an old timer but I am not sure, what model.

Wing span is over 5 feet, slight under camber airfoil, the horizontal tail has a slight under camber or flat built up airfoil as well.

Length is 3 ft.

Wing span is a just over 5 feet

wing cord is 9.5 inches

Covered in silk

Any help would be great. I want to find where the CG is and see if the model is complete, looks like the nose was chopped off. My little girl want me to teach her how to fly it, she calls it Big Red.

Thanks

Hi Tri-pacer,

I don't know, however the similarities are striking.

I agree, the fuse doesn't look quite right from what I can see in the PIC. Then again, I'm viewing it on my phone.

To me it looks like a Viking, upon doing a google search I found this, the Astro Viking.
It looks to be missing the motor cowl, hence making the nose look short.

Yeah, it's a Viking. The plan on Outerzone is a modernized version.

My vote is a Cabin Playboy with the polyhedral taken out. The Viking side windows go all the way back to the trailing edge, and the fuselage belly is more forward, where this one has a flatter belly and the upper longeron curvature is more pronounced than the Viking.

The upper longerons behind the trailing edge are too extreme in the picture. Of course that may have been due to something the builder did. But this extreme curve in that are was a feature of the cabin Playboy. So I'm going with the Playboy option with the dihedral changed to the simpler to build V dihedral.

I also thought it looked like a Viking at first , until I saw the above plan. The Leisure plan looks like a close copy of the original. I think it's a Leisure Playboy not an original.

After looking at it again on a "real" screen and reviewing my Cabin Playboy plans, I'm sticking with my first assumption. All that's left to do now is slap an engine on it and let us know how it flys! Good luck and nice find.

Thank you so much it has been a big help, this is the first old timer I have ever owned in my fleet. Looking up the videos of these planes flying seem like a very nice change from tiny pocket rockets where you don't dare blink or you'll lose it.

This plane is big and very light, I think it would make a good trainer to teach my daughter how to fly.

Now the big question. What size brushless should I use? I want to stay in the 3 cell range.

Thank you all again.

Your choices are many. Any 200-250 watt outrunner, on a 11-12" prop, would be fine for this model.
