Astroid Designs High Performance Motor/ESC Upgrade Kit for Walkera Genius CP/Mini CP

Upgrade Kit for the Walkera Genius CP and Mini CP Helicopter.

Dylan at Astroid Designs sent me the upgrade kit to test and review at my request.
The upgrade kit will be availbile soon. I will post a date when I find out when it will be ready.

Update: 10/10/12

Release date got pushed back a bit. I would say a few weeks on kits.

Kits will have:

C05M 13500KV motor/8 tooth pinion installed
10A V3 PnP ESC
7mm tail motor/mount/fin

Total cost will be $72
Everything in the kit will be available separately too.

You can also use the HP05S motor.
See my post here for information and pictures: http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showp...9&postcount=43

Here is what I received to test out.
  • AEO C05M 13,500 KV with a 1.5mm shaft and locking c-clip
  • .5 mod 8T and 9T pinions
  • Oversky 10A PNP Brusless ESC running the BLheli 6.0 main code
  • Oversky 7mm tail motor with a 1mm shaft - Comparable performance to the 4G3 tail motor
  • Astroid Designs custom made 7mm motor mount with fin
  • USB BLheli Flashing Stick
  • 609 Loctite

Overview:

The Oversky 10A PNP Brusless ESC is running the BLheli 6.0 main code.
It is loaded with features including a governer. It can also run a BL tail if you want.
You can program the ESC using the USB BLheli Flashing Stick and the BLheli software.
You can also program the ESC using the transmitter if you want.
The Oversky 7mm tail motor has more power than the stock motor to hold the tail.
This is needed due to the high power C05 motor. The stock tail motor will blow out.
The Oversky 10A PNP Brusless ESC can be purchased and installed on the heli and flown as it is. You don't have to program it.

The kit is easy to install. It is PNP execpt for the tail motor which you need to solder two wires.
You will also need to enlarge the tail blade a bit to get it to fit on the 7mm motor.
The 7mm tail motor and Astroid Designs custom made 7mm motor mount with fin will be sold as a set.

The ESC is easy to program. I made a How to video for it along with many more videos covering a lot of things.

First Flight:

Extreme power and rock solid tail holding! My Pitch travel is at L65 H65.
The pitch pumps are impressive. The heli shoots up or down very quick.

Flight time is good especially with the Oversky 400 mah linear 20C battery which I got a 6 minutes of full power. Twice the flight time of the
Hyperion 240 mah battery and much more flight time than the Turnigy Nano-tech 300mAh battery.

The C05 motor starts well with the ESC.

I took all of these measurements below with the governor turned off.
All testing below is done with the Mini CP helicopter using the Genius CP main gear or the Mini CP main gear.

Here are the ESC Settings I am using. The first picture is using version 6.1.1 the second picture is using version 7.0.0.1
which has many more options and I don't get the error messages when writing to the ESC. Thanks Dylan for letting me know that
the error messages were due to my ESC is flashed with Blheli V7, and I was using BLheli setup V6.11.

Note:

I soldered the 7mm tail motor wires red to red and white to copper color
but the tail motor ran backwards so when you install the tail motor reverse these.
I swapped the wires at the RX plug so I didn't have to redo the motor wires.

Nice job, Tom!

I'll hang around for the Mini CP flight times.

Thanks guys.

I just added results for the mini cp helicopter with the mini cp main gear that covers headspeed, thrust, and flight times.

I now have tested the mini cp helicopter with the genius cp main gear and the mini cp main gear using the 8T pinion.

My personal preference is the mini cp and genius cp main gear.
Dylan's preference is the mini cp and the mini cp main gear.
We are both using the 8T pinion.

Good review Tom!

Quick note about the error message in BLheli setup software, its most likely because your ESC is flashed with Blheli V7, and your using BLheli setup V6.11.

V7 has more programming options than 6.11, mainly just that you can now adjust beep volume and adjust the volume and delay time on the lost model alarm, or Beacon as its called in the software. A few other changes were more for Multi rotors and airplanes.

Each time Steffan Skaug (creater of BLheli) makes an update, Achim (4712 on HF, creator of Blhelisetup software) has to make an update as well to match the firmware.

Does that oversky 7mm motor help prevent blowouts on stock mcpx?

I haven't tried in on my mCPX stock or BL but from the posts I saw for the 4G3 tail motor it performs much better than the stock tail motor.
The 7mm tail motor is comparable performance to the Walkera 4G3 tail motor.

Maybe Dylan can answer this better for you as he sells the 7mm motor for the mCPX.

Update 10/10/12

I just found out some more information on the kit and posted it in the review under "Update".

Also Dkfuji is being sent the upgrade kit to test out.
We will be comparing our results and he will be testing the 8T and 9T pinions.

My ESC came with the Blheli V7 so I didn't have to flash it.

You can flash the ESC with the BLHeli-Setup 7.0.0.1. It has the hex file in it.
Press the button FlashBLHeli, then press OK. For my ESC the program
knows I already have the Blheli V7 installed and it asked me to continue anyway.

thank you for your fast and valuable answer. now, the shipments from Asia need to arrive here in Germany, (hopefully without delay by the German customs) so I can check it my self.

I will keep you posted if that upgrade of the cheap Hobbyking ESC works, so perhaps a good option for upgrading only the main motor with a C05M and 10A ESC for only ~ 33 USD with shipping...
