Fun51 engine?

Ok I decided it was time to build a kit again after 25 years. I'm starting with something simple, a Tower Hobbies (Great Planes) Fun51. My question is what engine would be good for this? I fly at 5,800 ft so bear that in mind. My options are an OS 40 FP near new, an older Royal 46 that's in great shape, or a OS 40 Surpas four stroke. Now the type of flying I do is mainly Kadet Sr stuff with an Astro Hog thrown in, not real aerobatic. I bought the Fun51 because my son had (may it rest in peace) a Sig Fazer and I really liked that you could fly very hot or throttle down and litteraly float around. I'm leaning away from the OS 40 FP, it flew my Sig Kadet Sr. (amazingly) but I don't know if it has the wheaties for the Fun51. The Royal 46 would be the hotest, but might be a bit powerful although it takes a 35 -50. The 40 four stroke would add realism but not sure about the power. What do you guys think?

All of the motors you mentioned will work, I have an OS .40 LA on mine right now & it flies fine. It has also had a .55AX on it, but didnt really need all that for the type flying i do with mine.... Gene

The engine I'd really like to put on is the 40 4 stroke, but that would have about the same power as a 35 2 stroke, not sure if it would be enough for it to fly as it should when you want to fly hot.

I would rather put the .40FP on it over a .40 4 stroke. I think you'd want a .52 four stroke minimum.

That's what I was thinking that the 40 4 stroke would be to small. What about the 46 Royal though, the OS 40 FP is a pretty mild engine, but if it would pull it without overkill then... By the way is there anything you guys recomend changing on the plane during the build? I noticed that the CG hole on the plans is about 1/4" further back than the dimple that was pre-punched on the fuse, which one should be used?

Great choice. Here's mine with an OS 40 LA. RIP. I pushed this plane hard. In the end I had rigged a wire on the tail and was doing arrested landings. Weak point is the landing gear (cough... arrested landings. haha). That needs to be tossed in the trash first thing. This is not a big plane and in my opinion needs to be kept light. If I was going to build another I'd go with an OS 35 AX. AX have way more than enough power for vertical. Gene, yours must have been insane with the 55.

I've seen one with retracts, but I wouldn't go that far. I'd probably modify with blocks in the wing and mount the LG there. The wing is a beast (cartwheeled many times and only dinged up) but the fuse is pretty weak to begin with. Fuse broke many times.

Popular choices for these plankies are a .45/46/47 class 2-stroke with a 12*4 prop on it (With a pipe. Typically MACS header + long neck beer bottle muffler)

however. given your altitude id go for a .50 case with a 12*4 or 12*5

I guess going with the Royal 46 would give power when I wanted and I can throttle back when not needed, I was just concerned about the weight difference. Dream can you clarify what you would modify? I'm not following you.

The aluminum land gear is complete crap. It will end up bending on even good landings. I'd either: 1) Replace it with an aftermarket landing gear. 2) Modify the wing with landing gear blocks and have the gear there. Like this...
