Anybody flying a Robbe Impression ?

To know what kind of adjustments, power set up and compare...

I am flying mine with seven 3300 GP cells, MGM Compro controller, Cyclon mini Elite motor with 12x8 aeronaut prop. CG is at 71mm opposed to what is said in the notice : 60 mm.

It's flying well since I put 2mm balsa under the trailing edge nylon screws but it still has a tendency to go up rather quickly ater a 45 dive.

G'day,
I have 1 which I haven't been able to successfully get in the air.
Here's the post I wrote on one of the other forums:

Not sure if this thread is still active. Have a quick question.
I have an Impression but have yet to work out a correct power combination.
First 2 test flights were terrible. First flight fried the ESC and she came down hard. All repaired for the second flight after getting some advice on a better combination from the local shop but still no good. Just doesn't have the power.
Can anyone with an Impression give me some direction as to which combination of Motor, Prop, Battery, ESC works well?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Regards,

Russ

Feel free to message back and let me know if your still flying.

Regards,

Russ

Impression setup

Yeah Im a slow typer!

It's been sitting round for years as a slope only but decided to convert it to electric which has been a difficult experience. I'm thinking most of the impressions have either met the turf by now or are long retired.
Still looking for a suitable set up though.

Hi Rusty, one of my friends from long ago had one of those and it looks nice. With modern equipment it should fly nicely. I had a similar model back then and it had 8 to 10 Sub C cells in there for 80 degrees climb angle. It had about 450W and the battery alone was 600 grams. With today's equipment you only need to be sure not to make it to fast!

Please tell us a bit more about what you have tried so far, write as much information as you have. So we can see what parts we can use again. Also some pictures of the fuselage install you have done and some dimensions such as spinner size would help. What servo's have you installed? A picture of the aileron linkages?

My initial thoughts would be to aim for 1000-1500 W using relatively cheap componants. With a 4S setup that would mean around 100A static.

I would advise you something like the below;
http://sloperacer.co.uk/_content/glider-motor.asp

Use this ESC;

Nothing wrong with Turnigy 3000mah 30C cells;
http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/s...Lipo_Pack.html

Another motor option, a fair bit more weight and much less efficient;

Enjoy!

Hey Jjmouris,

I had no idea anyone had replied to the thread! I ended up putting the Impression aside for a bit but have just dusted it off to check out a few options. If your still around, happy to absorb any more advise you can give. I'll check out all the links. Thanks for taking the time to help out.
I stumbled upon this site: http://www.mfc-kirchentellinsfurt.de...ad.php?tid=461
Then had a look at an equivalent Cobra motor from this mob: http://innov8tivedesigns.com/cobra-c...-motor-kv-1130.
I've purchased items from them before. Not a pro at finding motors but this one seems pretty similar.
Was planning on flying with 3S if possible. Although I currently have an Eflite Rare Bear which takes 4S 3300's so could use those if needed.

Regards,

Rusty

Hi, your not far off the sweet spot there. Nice link to that German build and not surprising his setup is similar to what I had in mind.

The Kv of that Cobra is tad high, you could only run 3S with that.

I would recommend trying this motor on 4S.

Then you still need to find a suitable prop and spinner.

Yeah I was planning on using 3s. I have an eflite allusive which is 3s 2200's. Unsure on the maths but would have been good to chuck those in as I have 4 of them. I'll have a look at props I have lying around and get back to you with the sizes. Thanks for staying touch. I'll post again ASAP.

Prop sizes,
Robbe: 12.5 x 6.5
Robbe: 10 x 6
Unknown Brand: 9.75 x 7.5
Aeronaut: 9x 7
Might end up needing to place an order for a couple more sizes to play with once a motor is found.
Last motor I tried was a redback 25, 1400 kv on 3s. Think the motor is still ok but it was in a pretty serious crash which is the cause for my postings. That was prior to having a watt meter though so maybe I chuck that 1 in, see if it fires up on a bench test and check the watt's / amps from there. Just need to grab an esc.

Yeah, motor tested and it's no good. Think its copped a pretty bad hit so I'll need to replace.
This one is currently in stock in the oz warehouse which is convenient for me. Slightly lower on the kv than the cobra. But higher than the one u recommended. I'm thinking it should be ok. Are the hobby king esc's easy to program??

Sorry, didn't include the link. It was a 1050KV of the same motor but it's not even available on back order at any warehouse. Same with the 740KV unless it's shipped from the UK. I'd say they have been discontinued.
Wondering if I just get another Eflite Power 15. Same as what's in my allusive.
950 Kv. Runs on 3S. I've even got a 10 X 6 prop to suit which is recommended. Flying weight of the impression is about 200g heavier. Could be the better option.

What's the power you are getting with that setup? I would say that this model would like a bit more power and prop pitch speed to really enjoy flying it. To compare, I was using a 13x9 and 14x10 prop before with only 450W for 60 deg rate of climb carrying the heavy Sub C cells (600gram) but 1000W would be better for a vertical climb.

With that setup in the allusive it flies as advertised. Fast and vertical But the more I look into it, the more I'm thinking the eflite will be far more expensive than that Cobra I was looking at even after it's shipped. I definitely want to achieve speed and spectacular aerobatics as that's just how I fly.
The Allusive bench tests at 350 Watts, 35A with a 12 X 8 prop.

Did you own an Impression??

No just a Simprop Selection which is slightly smaller a fair bit lighter. My friend had the Impression.

I would go for the Cobra and see if you can get 800W+ out of it.
