Sat Jan 28 Dome Fly

46 pilots for the dome fly tonight, the place was buzz'in!

DD got so comfortable hovering, that he requested a chair.

As usual, we hosted the 1S and 2S pylon racing.

Field Layout Options

Option 1 = Yucky, ,in my opinion, as I like flying from the "corner"
Option 2 = Winner

I agree Dave option 1 is a bad idea. I like flying at the corner, what do we hope to accomplish by eliminating flying there? Option 2 is the best compromise. That assumes compromise is what everyone wants.

Option 2, additional detail

Option 2 with the red shaded starting, arming, and stopping areas shown.
- E-W and N-S safety fences modified to show (1) opening each, for plane recovery. Need to consider project cost and fence rigidity.
- Extending the existing N-S spectator fence becomes an issue of total project cost, so I did not show it here. This is a minor detail, and can be decided later. Also the current large opening does allow for large plane field access and exiting.
- (4) vs (5) pilot stations in the corner is a minor detail.

Nice photos and thanks for sharing. Sorry I couldn't make it to the last couple fly ins and meetings Hope to see everyone on the 18th. Maybe Hobbytown John will even convince me to bring a fixed wing contraption.

Field Layout Option 3

•Zero capital cost
•No safety fence
•Red zones for starting, arming, stopping, disarming, and taxiing.
•Spread out existing pilot stations to the 25’ line (5 shown here for reference and comparison with Option 2)
•Basic concept would have fixed wing piloting from the corner pilot stations.
•Heli pilots in designated Blue area (last stall). Optional pilot station shown for clarity, at the same 25’ off sun shade distance
•Discussion: Where would heli’s be allowed to start? Either in normal Red Zone, or in heli-only red zone defined by a portable plane stand? In other words, no starting under the sun shade? (think consistency)
•Fixed wing flying on N-S vs E-W, depending on prevailing winds. Heli’s go on opposite active runway.
•Option: Handicapped pilots can use the non-active end stall and heli-end-pilot-station?

Flying Field Option 3a

OK, how about option 3a. Let the helis fly just like the rest of us, make the rule "it is suggested to use the central 5 (or 4 or whatever), or the outboard two (which are in front of the starting area) at your own risk. I'm sure if someone is at one of the outboard two, and someone is starting a plane behind them, the person starting the plane could warn the flyer and the flyer could temporarily move TO THE CENTER and then back when the plane is started and moved out onto the field. I believe there should be no flying AT ALL in front of the sunshades.
