Very nice. Recognise that AMT set up from doing one for my Phase 5! Although the 5 is a little slimmer back there and has 1/16" plywood walls.

joiner boxes

Thanks Garry et al.

Made some joiner boxes this am. 3 oz kevlar plain weave, with thread direction perpendicular to span to prevent bursting open on those massive DS circuits ;0)

In hindsight I should have been neater working the fabric to
give a clean straight edge at the root. The tip ends can be as rough as guts.

You can scroll-saw cut kevlar after it's set but it still ends up fluffy.
I'll have to apply a smear of bog afterwards then sand to make it
neater.

Chris.

I had to weight it down top/bottom after the wrapping to stop the fabric from balloning away from the joiner. kevlar wrap stops short of middle and ends by about an inch. Thought about a Ritz section Tim, but I'll try this first. The DS19 should be good too.

Another wing is an option. With the joiner box set-up multiple wings fit the same fuz.

I like the idea of a 2m wing with HN483 for slermalling.

joiner boxes done

Joiner boxes cured (still need another 24 hrs though) and joiner ends trimmed.

Nice project!

I'm a big Chris Foss fan: got a Middle Phase II sloper (learned to fly with it 19 years ago and it's still going strong!), and also a Wot-4.

I always fancied a Phase 6 - Great looking model. Now you mention the all moving tailplane to reduce drag , it looks to me like a good candidate for a wingeron or pitcheron conversion? Flat ply fuselage sides...or maybe it's just a twist-wing 'Phase' I'm going through

Cheers,

WIP, cloth cut for spars

The wide spar allows me to eliminate any shear-web.

Next-up, sanding the trench for the spars and not forgetting servo lead channels.

I've got these servos for my latest build. They have been tested on a DS plank and are awesome.

Hope you can get some for a good price. Don't see much point in buying expensive servos while those bad boys are around!

Had some spare time to move the project along a bit.

Cleaned the spray gun and sprayed the mylars, top orange, bottom black acrylic gloss thinned 40%.

The paint is drying, after which I'll wet-out the cloth on the mylars and apply it to the cores making 2 mylar/ cloth/resin foam tacos.

Then in the bag for 24hrs.

Kudos to Bill Haymaker & Phil Barnes for their vac-bagging DVD which has made this process hassle-free.

Looking very nice indeed.

I can see you have also watched the bagging video. It looks like you have done everything by the book there! Pasty and I used the methods and got some really good results so far.

Please post some more pictures as you go, very interesting to see.

DrFragnasty, when the Kevlar fray's during sanding I was taught to spritz the fray with Ca let it go off and continue sanding and repeat as necessary.

Other mods: 2 piece wing with joiner/ joiner box and plug in mpx connectors.

Chris.
Im curious, what construction type do the original plans call out for wing joining and sheeting?

Original Phase 6 wing set-up

It was just 1/16th sheet balsa over white foam cores Eric. The wing was built in 1-piece with a fibreglass wrap dihedral brace. 1 wing hold down bolt at the trailing edge and a 3/4" dowel at the leading edge located into F2.

Thanks for the CA tip Prodjx.

The vac pump is on for 4 secs and off for 40...there's a leak somewhere ;0) Despite this the vacuum is still around 20- 22".

Chris.
