Old Skool Phase 6

Chris Foss's Phase 6 is a fave of mine and I thought with a deeper fuz and lower frontal area, vac-bagged wing with live-hinged flaps and ailerons and an all-moving tail I could reduce drag and make it go a bit faster and have better knife-edge performance.

Other mods: 2 piece wing with joiner/ joiner box and plug in mpx connectors.

e374 and 1.7m span. HT13 tail section.

Chris.

It should be more rigid and faster I guess Phil. No real change to the moments/ aerofoil just lower drag. The flaps will add to versatility and the live hinging and wipers should help lower drag too.

AUW about the same as the orginal.

the 2-piece wing is an excellent idea - the big one-piece wing on mine was a pain to transport & store

The whole thing is a top idea - take a good old design and make it even better. Looking forward to seeing the finished article.

Thanks for the encouragement...it makes doing the tedious jobs that little less unpalatable ;0) I'm off to sand the tips.

Wip

Spent 2 hrs sorting out slop-free tail crank and rudder pushrod.

This setup is not ideal. If you pull the tail joiner out, the crank falls
inside. It's a bit of a pain to re-locate. I have to remove it to finish off
the fuz.

Next up is plank the fuz turtledeck, bag the tails.

Chris.

FYI I'm using West Systems resin with the fast hardener. This gives a 6hr cure.
Also the pivot blocks were reamed out to give a clearance, the hole then filled with bog mix then the waxed joiner inserted and left to set. Remove joiner and you have a solid mount.

Lovely Job!

Phase 6 is a classic and your update looks great.

If I were to try something like this I might be looking at a more modern section than E374 though - say, DS19?

Best of luck with it anyway, I just love Chris Foss designs and its great to see them still inspiring people to build in a traditional way
