Help!
How to maximize power?

What battery/prop combination will give max power from a Kontronic 500-27 w/ 5.2:1 gearbox for a GP Siren? Thats right I'm a newbie to electrics. I have found some stats with a lot of other motors but not this one. Any help will be appreciated.

Hi fab,

Please provide links to both the plane and the motor so we know what equipment you are referring to.

Thanks,

Chuck

GP Siren (Hotliner): http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=356191

The motor is rated for 27-cells and 45A/65A max... so here is one ballpark possibility.

Motor: Kontronik Fun 500-27 (12V); 2770rpm/V; 2A no-load; 0.0158 Ohms.
Battery: Hyperion HP-LVX3300 (20C); 6 series x 2 parallel cells; 3300mAh @ 3.7V; 0.005 Ohms/cell.
Speed Control: Castle Creations Phoenix 80; 0.001 Ohms; High rate.
Drive System: 12x8 folder (Pconst=1.16; Tconst=1) geared 5.2:1 (Eff=95%).
Airframe: Anything you want.
Motor Amps = 51.2
Motor Volts = 21.4
Input (W) = 1095.6
Motor RPM = 56567
Prop RPM = 10878
Thrust (oz) = 130.1
PSpd (mph) = 82.4

Here's another one for you... like Phil says... to get you started.

90 mph
141 ounces of thrust
6s Li-Po and an APC 13x10E prop

I think the wings'll come off with that much power. The Siren is designed for 3s...certainly NOT 6s. Even Soholingo is using only 4s and he's a speed addict. Might want to check in the numerous Siren threads in Electric Sailplanes.

Here's a link to a Siren search. GP Siren

Hi Mark,

You're absolutely right, of course.

I think Phil and I both, though, were trying our best to answer his question of how much "power" or watts he could get into the motor, regardless of whether it would be a good motor/prop for his plane. Personally, that motor would be my last choice for what he's after, or for the plane itself.

Why would it be your last choice? I have this motor sitting around doing nothing but if it's not a good choice for the plane I'm not adverse to getting something else. Like I said I'm new to the electrics.

I think 500W/lb is a nice fast sort of model!

But 13x10? no way! 11x17 maybe.. I've got one in the cad files somewhere ;-)

Of course, you can run the Fun 500/27 on 3s with a suitable prop and get whatever power the GP Siren requires. You don't HAVE to push the heck out of the motor.

As Chuck says, we were simply answering the first part of the question!

What battery/prop combination will give max power from a Kontronic 500-27 w/ 5.2:1 gearbox
