Tim, Will FMA be attending the 2013 WRAM and/or Toledo shows?

Hi,

We are not planning to attend either show this year. In recent years, our experience is that the overall cost of prepping and attending most trade shows does not justify our attendence. The industry has changed tremendously in the last 6-8 years. At one time we attended as many as 10 shows per year and most covered expenses, as a minimum. Over the past 3-4 years that has changed, at least for our company. We witnessed a pretty steady decline in traffic through the shows, and in some cases, a decline in the number of vendors. Last year was the first time we skipped the Toledo Show since FMA started in business. We will certainly consider trade shows in the future, but for now, we are concentrating our efforts and resources on R&D, which is working well for us.

I can totally understand this. I'm honestly surprised some industry (not just RC) trade shows have managed to survive as long as they have. As the RC community gets more tech savvy getting the word out about your products online is much more effective and cheaper then attending trade shows.

In many cases trade shows are an opportunity to see a product first hand and get to play with it, talk directly with the vendor, and hear about upcoming products and perhaps see working prototypes. Many vendors also offer show specials that are not available on-line.

While there's certainly a cost associated with attending trade shows it's also an opportunity to build a personal face-to-face relationship with the customer. That's something you can't do on-line.
