Marble -cutting and polishing

I have a sheet of marble from a fireplace merchant
(they have to cut out a big hole to suit whatever fire
you want to fit) and I intend to use it as a decorative
base for my many models.

Can I cut this with an ordinary saw, using water as a lubricant,
and, afterwards, how to polish up the cut edges?

Here on the left coast I have cut marble with a diamond blade in an
electric hand saw. Here the blades cost only about $20. Then I put
rounded edges edges on the sides with an ordinary woodworking router
with carbide bits. It would be a good idea to protect the surface with
some type of thin material.

An ideal saw would be one of the ones used by tilers, such as this:

Diamond saw running in a water bath - will cut through porcelain tiles
so would be fine on marble too. You can pick up replacement blades for
a few quid - would be easy enough to adapt one to fit e.g., a power
drill. Conventional carbon steel/HSS etc saw blades won't touch
marble.
